2H glow plug question

hi all just after some advice, the old boys 85model 60 series is hard to start now its come into the colder months, i have a manual for it but doesnt cover some things
Q is the glow plug system 12v (it does only have one battery but some engines can run 6v) also what is the spec for resistance across th glow plug.
Q. should there be a seperate manual switch that can operate the glow other than what normally is through the key switch
Q i read some where about a coolant temp sensor in the system, does this check eng temp and stop operating the glow when warm
so the best way to check voltage at the power strap is when could assuming full power is not achieved when eng is hot.
before checking glow plug resistance i checked power at strap and only got around 3-4 volts, how ever the vehicle was warm
any help would be greatly appreciated
luke
