We have been trying to find out wether the petrol and diesel motors both have shims or are the tappets on diesals just adjustable,
the reason my old 4.5 litre had the shim buckets and was told the 4.7 V8 also was the same, my mechanic always winged about how long it would take,
and i was trying to find out if the 4.2 tdi was the same or differant

The 1HDT-FTE (last of the 4.2l) have normal tappet style adjustment (12mm ringy and screwdriver. However they do have a valve bridge that needs to be adjusted as well. eg: 1 rocker arm opens 2 valves via a steel bridge across the valve tips. This bridge has to be set so it runs square to the valves otherwise you end up with the valves being pushed sideways creating premature valve guide wear and possibly dodgy valve seat contact. Its not overly difficult job just time consuming. The old 1HZ shim and buckets are a piece of piss to adjust!
