Hi just wondering if anybody has had similar issues. I have an 85 hilux just bought it. Power seems good untill about 2500rpm then it really struggles to go from there. Might be a fuel issue not sure i am new to diesels and don't know where or how to start looking.
Cheers

Fuel filter or fuel pick up in tank, check all hoses clamps are in good condition as sucking air in the lines will cause it to be down on power, but i doubt it will be that as you dont have any dramas starting the engine.
Mine doesent get any power until 2500 but turbo tho.

I had a similer problem when I got mine. Give it a good service replacing air filter, oil filter and fuel filter. My problem was solved by replacing the fuel filter, the old one was full of crap. But giving it a service you will know that it has been done and when to do the next one as some don't service their cars on a regular basis

when my fuel system was full of crap, i didnt lose power i just died and struggled to idle - that was a blocked fuel pick up.
when you say lose power do you mean, its gutless or it is dying and will not rev about 2500, or is dieing and surging etc.

just gutless pulls ok till around 2500 then just seems to not want to rev any harder

personally i would say its just running out of steam as they are not powerful engines, made more obvious by the 23 year age.
but making sure it can breath and drink properly are a good start.
does it blow black smoke? as if your injectors are not spraying correctly it might just not be able to combust the fuel enough to rev higher.
injectors are a few hundred to replace so start else where first.

Yeah its hard to explain, but once hit hits around 2500 it seems like it just doesnt want to go any further. My uncle also has the same model hilux and his seems to pull alot smoother through the rev range. Just went and got all stuff for service so ill give that a shot and see how that goes. No black smoke really so maybe it isn't getting the fuel it needs?

fingers crossed, its the best case scenario that its just a filter.
its quite amazing how much better some old yot diesels go than others. early life care i guess.

they arent quick , fuel contamination probably and check air filter as said , you will probably slso find your priming pump wont prime up when you change the filter wich can be an bugger because you dont know till its too late.

Priming pump worked a treat. I think i have buggered up with putting filter back on tho as i have one of those glass bottom things. Running like a bucket of arse now. Will have to pull it off and redo it tomorrow.

Yeh I found out the hard way when I did mine, used the air compressor to push the fuel form the tank to the filter

my 3L is doing the same thing.. or something simular.
up until 3,000rpm it runs normal but after that it seems like its not getting enough fuel, loses power, surges, runs really ruff, splutters..
hard to explain! i am in the motion of changing my fuel filter and hoses running to and from it.
hopefully this helps as the engine is rebuilt and i recently put brand new injectors in it (next thing would be injector pump $700+)
let ya no if i get any improvements and i will be following this topic.
GOOD LUCK. HTH

Problem solved. Turns out replacing the fuel filter made all the difference. After i replaced it, it was sucking some air through the filter so after taking it back out resealing it and putting it back on the ute is running like a dream!
Diesels really don't like any air in there.

great.
the old hilux diesels usually dont need to be primed, they will tend to just suck it up for you. wbhich makes life easier,as the pumps are often not much use.
