The best place to start would be with a decent turbo kit, intercooler and 3 inch turbo-back exhaust. Then get the boost and fuel turned up (by a reputable diesel shop) and enjoy!

80series are mechanical injection, no computer to put a chip in
best mod to go with the turbo is a 3" mandrel bent exhaust all the way from the back of the turbo. you can run it with no mufflers or 1 straight through muffler depending on how much noise is OK for you
intercooler would be next on the list, then have it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing

cool,
So by doing that without a intercooler to start of with what would be the power difference

bigger exhaust will allow the turbo to spool up faster giving boost at lower RPM, so it will get off the mark quicker, it will also allow it to keep producing boost longer into the rev range. It should be more responsive throughout the rev range.
3" exhaust made a big difference to my factiory turbo 80 series.
the biggest problem with turboing 1hz seems to be people get greedy for power and fuel tham up to the point that they run hot.
Intercooler will allow you to increase the fuel settings more without causing the engine to run hot as well as allowing you to increase boost a bit more so you have the capacity to make more power
