Hey guys,
Thinking about throwing an manual in my rangie instead of the auto. Has anyone done this before? did you run into any problems? Is the 4 speed a good strong box or should I go for the 5 speed?
Cheers
Luke

We've had an early 4 speed for about 15 years or so and its bullet proof as far as im concerned, the transfer case gears gave us a bit of trouble but apparently they're notorious for wearing and dropping out of gear but it was fine once we replaced them. also changed one of the gears to give a better ratio so i wasn't revving the guts out of it at 110. Early 5 speed were weak apparently but not sure why. my old man said its probably due to the strength of them. thanks dad.
someone here will let you know more soon, just my 2c

I must be really unlucky with 4 speeds . I've had 3 die on me. In various ways ranging from bearings to center diffs to getting stuck in low. Unfortunately when you buy second hand you are also buying other peoples good/bad maintainance abilities . The one in the bobtail now seems to be a good one though (touch wood ).
