how do you slide the cv down over the axle with that circlip on the end of axle, is the answer a big hammer,

best bet is a close fitting piece of pipe (over the axle) that is a little longer than the axle. then you ram the pipe downwards onto a piece of wood, sorta works like a slide hammer,
failing that, a drift onto the inner race with the axle held in a vice.
Either way you'll most likely destroy the clip

Hold the axle in a vice, then slide the cv on as far as you can by hand making sure the circlip is sitting in the groove on the axle properly and that inner race of the cv is on straight. Then hit the end of the cv with a copper or rubber mallet (so you don't mushroom the end of it) until it slides home. If you give it a hit and it doesn't budge, make sure the circlip isn't sticking out to one side too far, it sort of needs to sit central on the axle if that makes sense. The circlip will compress has the inner race of the cv slides over, then it will expand once it pops out the other side. They can take a bit of a whack to get it on. This is how I've always done and haven't had any problems except for the odd mangled circlip when I didn't have it positioned properly.
