Looking at getting a '94 Roza

Hi Guys,
Went and looked at a '94 model Roza out woop woop from Melourne yesterday... Very impressed with it.. 219K's, and imacualte inside and out.. Has bullbar, UHF, etc..
The owner has ditched the stock airbox set up and fitted a K&N Airpod.. Now obvious a problem if i decided to go swimming.. But I've got a few questions I'm hoping some of you might be able to answer...
1. 2" Suspension lift... How much is it going to set me back?
2. Fitting a Snorkel.. How much baring in mind it doesn't have the stock airbox.
3. And most importantly... What can I do to increase it's power bar the obvious.. Extractors and Zorst... And how much of a power increase have people found just by doing this mod???
I'd just wanting to give it abit more power for towing, going up hills, etc.
4. I have a road bike and a trail bike, and i'd be towing 1 of them from time to time and both of them, when i do my trip to Brisbane... Will it be able to tow ok??
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan.
Towing a bike won't be a problem. I've had mine fully loaded inside, plus a 330 litre luggae pod on the roof racks and towed a small tipping trailer with a Suzuki 185 Quad in it (plus other junk). I could easily sit on 110km/h, plus overtake given enough space.
A wrecker should be able to supply the factory canister for a snorkle fittment later. You'll probably have read that there are no off the shelf snorkles for Ferozas anyway. It could even be easier to find the filter assembly off another 4WD and start from scratch.
Extractors alone will give a very noticeable improvement. I'm running mine with the standard cat and rear section, but there is still a huge improvement.
The suspension lift all depends on how you want to do it. The front is adjustable in height- so you won't need to spend anything on that end. The rear can be done by extended shackles (illegal) or there are a number of places that do replacement springs. Have a search through the FAQ post.

wow, a very great looking truck! i would look into getting it. also what you want to consider is maybe not using the stock air filter. you could fit a snorkle to it and fit a filter somewhere along the line or even stick it up on top. i'm considering that myself. but will be a long while before i even mess with a snorkle... but if i ever get around to it before you do, i will let you know on what i decide and how i do things. as david said, you'll have no problem pulling stuff like that. the puny 1.6l only puts out about 105 hp, but dont let that fool you. that engine is very well known to snap engine mounts. i was able to sit on 3rd gear, holding a steady 60 mph on a 6% grade uphill climb while pulling a ton's worth of personal items, tires, trailer, furinture, and other things (was moving). sadly i broke an engine mount after climbing a 10 mile uphill grade and with the engine under the strain, it threw a rod and shot a hole through the block. so be careful. i'm looking into modding my mounts so it can flex better and take more strain. you'll be slow getting off the line but like i said before, that engine is one torquey mutha!

IF I were to get another Roza it would have to be an early model narrow track. Sure the later wide tracks look the part bur going on personal experiance and reading these posts I just have to say the earlier models are a better truck and just have to be better in the bush.
David. I fitted a set of Hurricane extractors with 2" exhaust and a Lukey sports muffler and I have to say the performance increase wasn't all that noticable except up around and over 5000RPM. Had heaps more torque down low with the standard system. Ask Murray about Victoria Pass.
looks like a nice truck and maybe worth $8500.

Snorkel - Nothing after market... has to be custom. there is info in FAQ's and recently in a thread from Ferog.
Power - Extractors etc... cam, the usual power can be done... I thnk even a turbo can be put on.
Towing - No probs towing those things matey....
It looks great, decent 'roza for the right price....

Interesting Leon. I've got Hurricanes too and the torque seems to come in about 500rpm earlier, but the top end is pretty ordinary. (ie. bottom end and midrange are better, above 5500-5750rpm you're wasting your time.) Possibly they've changed the design?
I get the rest of the system done on Wednesday- 2" with a resonator and turbo muffler. I don't want to lose torque....
You've got me worried now....
For power increase I found the K&N pretty ordinary, the thermo fan next best, and the extractors best for power increase.

What do you base that on Leon ?? - Everything I have seen leads me to the exact opposite
Biggest difference is stabilty - especially when you start to lift it. 120mm is a damn lot of extra width - comes in really handy with SWB Box on wheels
Personally I would only look at a narrow track for cost reasons ( & have been doing quite a bit of looking lately
) - but of course my purpose would not inlcude keeping any of the drivetrain at all
In fact in would be as wide as Widetrack by the time I finished

David, why are you bothering with the Resonator ???? Keep the cash & just put a decent sports muffler in there by itself. The Feroza isn't a noisy engine to start with - even with all the work I did to mine it wasn't overly noisy - just sounded good

G'Day Dan,
Well that would have to be the most detailed ( as in cleaned up ) Feroza I have seen - it looks in good nick.
220k kms worries me a bit - has the engine had any work done to it ?? Log books would be invaluable here - although they are a fairly rugged little 4wd, they have crap power to weight & that little 1.6L works fairly hard thanks to 1300 odd kilos of weight & high gearing. Clutches & Gearboxes would be on my check list - Timing Belt changes as well.
Rest of the truck is rugged - axles , diffs, body etc are as strong as they get.
2" Suspension lift is easy - expect around $1000 with Rear Leaf Springs & 4 Shocks - add another $450 with front Torsion Bars ( not a must have )
Ultimate Suspension is my personal No.1 for the Feroza by a LOOOONG shot. TJM would be next - DON'T go near 4Ways ( Tough Dog or whatever they call themselves these days ) - wouldn't reccomend Ironman either.
Snorkel - just go something custom. Any decent 4wd Modification place should be able to make a nice custom Stainless Snorkel for around $400 - 500. Besty would probably be able to recommend a good Victorian 4wd Place. Go for a nice high flow easy to buy Air Box ( Commodore ?? Hilux ?? )
More Power ?? Extractors & Exhaust as you said - don;t get too excited though - it really doesn't make that much difference. ( does sound like it is going faster though
)
I slipped a MRT Cam in when I did the Timing Belt & it did make a small difference again - even more when I port & polished the heads & put a Unichip on it. Biggest difference of everything was the 5.57 gears though - but I was running 31's at that stage
To be honest - if I were to do it again I would just do the Extractors & Exhaust & the Air Intake via a Snorkel & reduced plumbing & live it as is. Would seriously look at upgrading the whole Engine / Gearbox / Tx Case though
It will tow it OK ( just ) - don't expect to break any speed records though. Get used to 3rd gears for hills - you'll need it. Plan overtaking moves at least a week in advance. 100kmh on the flats will be managable. Expect to replace the clutch a lot if hill starts are involved. If towing is more than a twice a year event then you are buying the wrong 4wd.
Hope this helps - Mike H.

Looks like a good vehicle, I like the air horns
That's in good condition and fully optioned as far Ferozas go. My vehicle runs like a dream after 260000 kms(touch wood), and it's had to work hard in that time. It's cost me a bit to maintain, but in comparing cost it still amounts to good cheap motoring, if that's what your looking for.
If you want something nice to drive around in and a bit of light to med/hard off-road Ferozas are good. If you want something cheap that can be pigged up for extreme off-road, go the suzuki seirra and heavily modify. Another option I've seen quite a few jokers getting around in 4x4 dual cabs like a hilux, navara and the trial bikes strapped to the tray. I would never part with the feroza but it certairly deserves consideration if buying. An automatic intercooled turbo diesel would pull alot harder if you were towing.
Cheers
Jim

It looks like an alright little car for the price.
Mine tows ok but CHEWS through the fuel when I am. When I do tow it is usually a small box trailer with an empty fridge and freezer (minus the motor - they just store ice).
You will be happy with your purchase

Just my personal observations and it seems the newer wide tracks break more than their fair share of CV joints and have major engine problems. I really caned mine off road and the only problem was a broken exhaust flange. My motor was as sweet as a nut at 140000klm's. Can't really speak on the stability factor however not too many 4WD's are all that stable for that matter.

Well I got approval, so it's getting the RWC done tommorrow, and I'm going to give it a second inspection (minus the rain) and get the drive train looked at to ensure everything is ok.
$8,500 with Roadworthy has been agreed upon. So i'm pretty happy with that.. Esp with the little extra's it has..
Will know more tommorrow arvo

With standard sized tyres mine tows really well with the sort of loads that are being discussed. Through the Adelaide Hills I rarely had to change down with a small tipping trailer and a Suzuki Quad, plus the Feroza was fully loaded. Had it up to 140km/h at one stage overtaking on a flat section.
Not that I recommend/ condone that sort of thing.....

the thing i love about the ferozas is that when i hit somethin like a 6% grade uphill climb, pulling a fully loaded trailer (like when i was movin, almost 2,000 lbs!) i was able to shift into 3rd, maintain a steady 55-60mph, revin at 6,000 rpm easy. passing EVERYONE since they were all slowing down due to the steep hill climb. loved it! and the noise! oh baby......
of course this is what led to my engine mounts twisting and snapping in half. with the load it was under, the engine became very unbalanced and shot a rod through the block....
so be careful there. try not to get too carried away. you'll be fine towing stuff, you'll jus be slow getting off the line and getting up there. but relating to torque, you got nothing to worry about. it WILL move.

Well I went and looked at it again...
The owners had his mechanic start on the RWC, and it's getting 2 new back tyres, and front pads, has a muffler leak, but not sure what's happening there as yet... Not fussed about the exhaust.
Agreed on $8,500, but with the new tyres we're agreed on $8,600 with the RWC. which i'm happy with.
Had a 2nd opinion so far as inspection goes, and other than the above, they picked up on some minor sandblasting on the windscreen, and some slight gearbox noise..
Also got the last 2 service invoices from the mechanic..
In the last 4,000K's it's had a new clutch, ignition leads replaced (due to cold starting problem)..
So I'm pretty happy with the way things are progressing..
Should be picking up the beast on Saturday with any luck..

Sounds good Dan.
Gearbox noise is most likely just a sign of it being worn. Mine makes noise in second and third, but should still last a long time according to my mechanic. You could try changing the oil to a different type and that may help quieten it down.

I changed the gearbox & transfere case oil to Shell Helix Synthetic, not to sure of the grade.
Was a good move as it defnitly made the box easier to use and the changes sweeter.

For the gearbox oil Redline make some supposedly really good oils in their "shockproof" range. I've been meaning to try them, but they are reasonably expensive. Their oils are a bit thinner which will help with changes in cold weather; but supposedly cope well with high shock loads.
A friend uses it in a import Jap Skyline that's highly modified (mid 12 sec 1/4 mile R33 2.5 turbo GTST). Reckons they're really good for worn boxes too.

Yay, we just brought Roz to her new home...
Gave the misses abit of a drive on the way back (swap cars).
She loves it... But spose the fact that her stereo was stolen and this one
has tunes doesn't help...
Now to rest up and go get it nice and dirty this arvo..... (if i can muster up the energy)
