Replacing a 1hz with a 2h?

Everyone goes the other way, but I happen to have a clapped-out 1hz engine in a decent Troopy camper, and what seems like a good 2h engine in a rustbucket.

I know that it may be of dubious legality to put an older engine in a new car, but that aside, it is feasible?

Bear in mind I have the complete running gear and body for the 2h Troopy - good 5-speed gearbox, all the ancillaries, engine and gearbox mounts etc.

I'm inclined to think it should be a fairly astraighforward swap and will save me $3500 for a reconditioned 1hz plus installation costs. (I wouldn't install the reco engine myself, but am willing to risk my own basic mechanical skills in doing the secondhand engine swap...)

What about swapping the bodies over instead? Would then negate legal issues as you maintain the same chassis. Not sure how easy it is though.

hmmmm.... interesting idea, but when I say rustbucket I mean rustbucket. It wouldn't surprise me if the chassis was beyond salvation.

The 2H was a far better motor than the 1HZ anyway. appart from a bit of power loss you won't be going backwards

i also recommend removing any disk brakes for drums, converting efi to carbies and removing coils for leaf springs.

hahah i love it

but i can see the merits in this case specially if turboing down the track 2h is stronger for turboing and bullet proof old injector pump too

In what way?

1hz is more power, smoother and mostly lasts much longer than a 2h.

Is it opposite week or something? 2h stronger than a 1hz for turboing? I must be going crazy.

i like pushrods =] when you go camping with the 2h you can use them as tent pegs for an awning if you get stuck.

LOL ya need a big farkin stick to kill a 2h if its set up right and a good turbo one will run rings around the 1hz even if the 1hz was turb'ed to 2h would still outlast and out perform its later mungrel bred brother :D :D :D

Do you seriously believe the 2H is a better engine than a 1HZ?

I own a Hj60 btw and have rebuilt a 2H. If i had my time again i would have definantly found a 2nd hand 1HZ to put in.

Yep i sure do they are a great old donk looked after proper they will go for ever or till at least the rings/bores wear and that they need ether to fire cause the compression is too low :P :P

The only way to step up from a 2h IMO is to put a 1 in front and a T behind it go the 12HT :D :D :D

Old school oilers there super reliable as long as there serviced proper ...
