TJ - Blowing Steam but Temp Gauge Normal

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to diagnose the GF's TJ. About a month ago we noticed steam coming from the bonnet. It was coming from the rad cap. The temp gauge was normal so I replaced the cap thinking it was stuffed. Just now I've noticed a heap of steam coming out from the bonnet. This time you could hear it bubbling through the overflow bottle. Once again the temp was sitting at half way as normal.

Any idea what could be causing this? If it's overheating why isn't the gauge registering it?

I'd say the gauge is stuffed, or the sender unit.

could it be a blown head gasket, or cracked head, pressurizing the cooling system???

Yup if the fluid level is very low the sensor won't give a correct reading.

There was plenty of coolant in the overflow so I originally assumed the system was full. Thought it could have been an airlock so I took the rad cap off and realised that it was only about half full. Explains the temp gauge. No milky oil so probably not a head gasket. Found that one of the welsh plugs was leaking. The mechanic had pointed out that a couple were corroded about 6 weeks back but they weren't leaking. Well one is now.

Thanks for the help guys.

depending on where the corroded welsh plugs are they may be able to be replaced with the motor in the car.
