Hey guys, I just recently blew my gearbox to pieces towing my tandem car trailer and was wondering if this was due only to the box age/state of use, or if these are simply not up to the task of towing?
Also would there be any replacements that I could use that dont require a change of bellhousing etc? (i dont think there are, but i thought I would check anyway)
Oh and its a 5sp manual froma petrol model

you can rebuild it with a gear set out of a 2wd gear box as the input gear is wider and stronger

Unfortunatley yep you'll need a new bellhousing to go to the R series Surf/V6 4runner box but its not worth throwing good money after bad and putting another hilux box in. They are not strong enough once you up the power with a v8 even when in good condition.
Dellows/Marks/Castlemaine Rodshop all do bellhousings.
I've got a dellows and am happy with it.

What year Lux is it maby worth doing the whole drive line up to handle a bit more abuse if ya want to tow and do heavy work...
Fit 60 diffs and 60 box and transfer there cheap as shyte and heaps stronger and you will gain some more wheel track to boot...
