I have a 75 series ute with a 350 chev in it and my gearbox is stuffed so im chasing a new one, how do stock gboxes hold up? especially with the 8? what else fits right in that might be better?

Mate I've got a 1UZ Toyota V8 in my 75, and from what i have read the good old H55F box is stronger than the later model H150? or H151?

I have just had a mate put a gearbox & transfer kit in mine which only cost me $530 in parts. Should be good for another 300000kms.

Agreed, h55 is the way to go..
saw a couple on ebay the other day for $800 bucks, fully recoed.
Thought that was rather cheap. dont know if they sold or not. Might be worth a gander.

Are you guys dreaming!!

please tell me where this info came from (that a 55 is stronger than a 150)

the h15x was developed as a bigger stronger box for the bigger heavier 80 series
they rarely give trouble and are very strong

thats why they are fitted to all the v8 petrol and turbo diesel cruisers from the 80 series til now in the new v8 utes
only the na 1hz (95 kw ) had the h55 in the 70 series the petrol's and TD's all had the bigger stronger H15x

we could never sell enough h55s had to end up keeping reco ones on the shelf they always wear out or blow up they are an evolution of the old 4speed box

we always had plenty of h15x boxes as not many wanted them (cause they dont fail)

there are a crap load of ls1's getting around infront of h151's in bigger heavier 80 series's and virtually no failures

i think the h15x has a better bearing set up in the tranfer with tapered bearings instead of rollers with brass thrust washers.

okay so a H15x series sounds like a better box, will it fit straight in? im yet to see how the current box is attached to the chev would it be a custom bellhousing? and the transfer cases usually come with the gbox? are the rasnfer cases different for a H55 and a H15x

I have followed many a post on which is the better box. Most if not all recon the 55 is better, but thats something for the "experts" to decide not me. If you want to fit a 150/1 you will have a hard time doing it from what I hear.. My 55 gearbox is 13 yrs old and still works perfect. never opened and done 300k. cant be that bad then?

are you talking h150 0r r150 ?

completely different boxes

there is no way in hell a h150 is not as strong as a h55 you should see them pulled apart there is no comparison

Obviiously some confusion. I was refering to the " R " box as in 79 series.

If you fit the mod32 gear in place of the transfer input gear that is available from Don Kyatt spare parts this will help you out heaps. Has approx 3 times the spline strength of the standard gear. This and 5th gear issues are the main failure pionts with the H55 box.

I have put an 80 series box in to a 75 ute was a few years ago but there was massaging to the tunnel to get it in.

ok so mechanically they all fit up? including transfer case and shafts?tunnel changes are not a problem as my brother is a boilermaker

Mate as far as i can remember it all fits using 80 series transfer aswell like i said it was about 4-5 years ago. There was no major modifications to the tunnel just bash it with a sledge hammer to get the bell housing to slide up to the motor once in there are no clearance issues.

also if it's a pre 92 mod(i think??) you will prob have to move the chassis cross member (tube one behind the box) back a bit and move the mount.

and modify both drive shafts

if it is post 92 the cross member is already moved for you.

not 100% on that but pretty sure.
