New GQ for me with issues

Hi Guys,

I finally bought a 90 GQ LWB ST the other day, after looking at all the alternatives. Its a 4.2 dsl with a dynamics turbo, 2" body and 2" sus lift, running 33s.

I went for a run with the camper over the weekend and it has a couple of issues. The heater doesn't seem to be working, ands I am not sure where to start with this one. Anyone? Is this a common prob?

Also, when running on Stockton it seemed to hover just over half way on the temp guage most of the weekend with 12psi in the tyres. On the freeeway it runs fine, even at 110. I tried all sorts of pressures from 18 south, and 12 was about the best on the beach. I was not wanting to roll a tyre off the rim due to only having 7" rims at the moment with the 33s.

Can anyone recommend a good diesel mechanic on the northern end of the Central Coast?

Tried the fuses?

Get some 8s they are only $50ish

Thanks Bogged.

I didn't think that a fuse would control the heater, but I will check. I also have ordered some matt black 15x8s with a custom offset, to sit the tyres out from the chassis a bit more than the 7s do. I asked on here in the wanted section and noone seemed to be parting with 8s or 10s...

Mind you - 10s will make your insurance policy invalid. as most engineers refuse to engineer 15x10s. - unless its off a ford f100 etc

15x8s arnt expensive. Like Bogged said - 50 bux each

'custom offset' gettin custom rims may be more expensive. But you could always chase down some 'landcruiser' 15x8s as they have different offset (out wider) to patrols. So landcruiser rims on a patrol would have the tyres sittin along the flare (dependin on width of tyre) (referrin to 12.5 wide)

heater not going - prolly the fuse.

so exactly what fuse could be the issue? The only one I found with a prob was the stop light one, and I have replaced that. The fan is working fine and the AC is also going well, but the thing just won't blow hot air. Are there other controllers up under the bonnet?

Also re the wheels, we will see how we go with the legal issues once I have the 6" springs in...

forget about the fuse if it's not blowinh hot air but the fan is working.

Does it have a thermostat installed. May have had an overheating issue which is not to uncommon and to combat this they have pulled the thermostat.

Check this out as it only costs about $30 from nissan to replace or reinstall. Could also be stuck open stopping it from heating up.

is the heater core connected is another?
is the heater core bloked?
is the heater core control valve that goes from hot to cold working.

and the list goes on and on.

I would assume that it has a thermostat installed as it runs just below half on the freeway and heads north slightly on the beach. It runs about the same (just under hald) in every driving condition that I have put it through on the open road, including cold nights lately, hot days and towing my camper. It has never moved except on the beach on sunday.

It looks like this is a mechanics issue. I will get the cooling system serviced (tanks cleaned etc) while it is done.

Less chance of rolling a tyre off with them on the 7s rather than 8s.

how do you figure that Dave? The tyre can move without the rim moving more at low pressure on a 7" rim than on an 8" rim. Steering sensitivity proves this to me. What's you're theory?

It is harder for the sidewall to get pushed off the bead because they are being held tighter by the narrower rim.

Correct , narrow rim, tyre holds on better to a point.

Nissan turbos always run into the high side under duress, seems to be quite normal. Mine has done for last few years. Only a bout 10 degrees in it.

You only need to check lower fins not clogged externally.
remove two top bolts and lean back to view.
