Hi,

I'm doin a body swap from a 88 surf with ifs to a 84 4runner solid axle. Yep a solid axle conversion! I'm gunna take all the diesel running gear with it as well. The old 3Y is a dinosaur and gotta love the turboed diesels.

The problem is that the gearbox/transfer thats in the Surf 2L-T, is a constant 4wd, turning both diffs at all times. Yep very sluggish! I dont want this problem when i convert the solid axle to diesel.

Can i just do something with the transfer thats bolted up to diesel at the moment ?(which i'd rather do, due to better condition), OR will the diesel motor bolt straight up onto 3Y gearbox/transfer?

Cheers!

You should be able to bolt the 2LT up to the 22R gearbox if you use a diesel bellhousing. However the gearbox that's now behind the @LT would be an R series as opposed to the G series behind the 22R. The R series is a much stronger box and is worth keeping, especially with the turbo motor.

In my hilux i have a 2LT and R150F gearbox from a 1990 surf with the original gear driven transfer from my hilux. To do that you'll need an adapter like this

As far as aim aware none of the surfs were constant 4WD. They do have a chain drive transfer case which you cant buy lower gears for. The 4WD activation may also be done with an electric actuator rather than mechanically as in the gear driven t case. These were the main reasons i didn't keep the chain drive case when i did my swap.

Hope that makes sense to you and helps you out

and you can also swap to manual locking hubs instead of the drive flanges they have. i did this swap and it made a big difference

x2, it would be best option, instead of messing about getting a new bellhousing etc etc.
