i got one and it's great , dunno about cutting 14mm plate ? my biggest drama is when my compressor kicks in and the amps on the plasma cutter is about 3/4 full the fuse box tends to get me visiting it to flip the trip switch (only have 10amp in the garage though its rated 16amp) so i just rest when the compressor kicks in till it builds enough to cut out . but if i have the dial to 1/2 or below i have no dramas , and make a short adapter lead so no warranty is voided and it can come in handy for ya welder as well.

on the other question they are so easy to use (had my 9yr old use it the other day with me watching him) and these have the button on the handle where as some of the older models and i supose some of the currant models won't use a button meaning you have to use it like a stick welder to start it (arc it out) which sucks if there is a lot of paint or rust areas you wanna cut .just remember to have a good earth and away ya go. They are brilliant for cutting checker plate and cutting guards and panels etc , not as versitile as a oxy set but heaps easier and safer when it comes to cutting . at these prices every one should have one :D i paid around $600 delivered with heap of extra tips ,sheilds etc .and i thought that was cheap .

cheers Jai

hope that helps

I'm not sure they are safer. A 30,000 degree arc that will cut anything that conducts electricity..... including fingers. Our supplier at work made sure I was aware of this. At least oxy gives you reflex time from the heat.

This said, the plasma makes oxy cutting redundant in our workshop and its most definately my preferance.

safer in the sense you don't have oxy or actylene to go boom , and oxy uses alot more heat into the metal being cut leaving it hotter for longer allowing more time to get burnt and the flame is going before you cut where as the plasma is only on when cutting . so safer in most situations ;)

i woudl still say it is safer the moment the arc goes out they are pretty benign ...

Not as versatile as an oxy, but for guards and anything other than tray and chassis my oxy tends to burn shit behind it hah:P, so imo the plasma wins for these soughts of things, i'd use a plasma alot more than my oxy, im forever getting the grinders etc out because the oxy will make a mess around the area eg wiring/hoses etc.

I have had one for several years now and hasnt missed a beat, I payed just under $1000 for mine.

One thing though make sure u get a really good air dryer for it, my torch is on its last legs (is chewed out where the tips go) because of moisture in the air.
