Diff breathers

Just a heads up -

I have been looking for decent hose for diff breathers - I went to Clark Rubber, they have clear garden type hose that is good and strong, with a 4mm ID for about $4 a metre...

So, anyone searching, try there.

wont last with heat and oil vapour, use fuel hose or vacum hose

You could try your local Dixon stockist. Far cheaper than Clarke Rubber, I think I paid approx $35 for a 20metre roll of oil/petroleum hose 6mm.

Don't use fuel hose, it will go like jelly with oil.
use ATF cooler hose, at least it will last

Seriously, how much oil is likely to go through the hose, assuming the shiny side stays up?
I used clear plastic hose on my old hilux and it lasted fine for 3 years until I sold it, I never saw oil in the hose...

I used to believe that but have been running it for 3 years on my PCV and no softer than new so I dunnno unless brands play a big part.

There is a specific Aust standard (it escapes me now) that covers oil/petroleum hose, we use it at work with no issues.

I use radiator overflow-bottle hose.
Cheap from supercheap etc. and has lasted for more than 1 year so far with no signs of degrade.
Run it for front and rear diffs, transfer and gearbox.

I used 'clear plastic' hose, like lump_a_charcoal.
Lasted fine for the 6 months they were on my Hilux. I never saw any oil in the hose, and would presume that if oil was to get sucked up the hose, you would have other problems to work out....

Clear hose "may" harden with oil fumwes and UV degradation. Also if it gets hot it can kink and temp block itself.

these lines will be under the car so id presume they wouldnt be getting much sun

I have used that clear hose, look's like Bong tube, but smaller :lol: .

Ran this in a Rangie for years and never had a problem, and yes the Diff's DID have oil in them :D

Used 4-5mm black fuel hose.

Have been told to be careful it dosen't kink, ask Bru21. His kinked and blew the seals on the diff out

if fuel hose goes gummy with oil, how do you run diesel through it?

To be honest I hadn't heard the bit about them gumming up

but I had heard about soft plastics bending over

I just used 5mm or so fuel hose, no gumming up, i dont imagine there will be.

1000000 things people say not to do, i do 900000 of them and it's fine, one off's etc etc get thrown around as a sure thing, just like everything in life, tv's, ifs etc etc haha

I used semi-rigid nylon air line with push-fit fittings. I got a threaded push-fit elbow fitting to replace the hose barb on the diff housings, ran lines from both diffs and gear box and transfer up in to the engine bay.

it was easy to loop it so it had spare length to allow diffs to droop with out it kinking, easy to run along chassis with a just few zip ties to brake lines ;)
I had the tube and fittings cost me about $20

so long as you use a hose containing Nitrile you should be fine. it's usually part of synthetic rubber comonly used in the automotive industry and resists degradation from fuels and oils. the higher the nitrile content the less likely it is to fail however, the hose will be stiffer. it is generally refered to as Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR).

I used the soft rubber irrigation hose from Bunnings 6mmID or so.

Been fine for over 2 years and being in a Rover it is oily all over and is fine :lol:

Cost next to nothing. I think I did both diffs for about $5.
At that price who gives a shit if you have to redo it every few years.

I did some up for my lux a couple of weeks ago, i just went down to Repco they had everything there. Fuel hose, fuel filters, clamps and fittings. Cost me about 40 bucks total to get the lot. I never realized how helpful they are until then.
