grinding gears

Hey Guys, I've got a 92 sierra, slightly modified with 31's and 2inch lift, and I'm having trouble changing gears when I go from any gear(mainly 2nd) back to 1st. The gears grind, and I have to be almost stationary before I can put it into 1st gear. I don't think this normal, however a friend told me it's because there is no syncro-mesh back to first?? All other gears work fine, and changing from 1st into 2nd is fine, it's just going back to 1st thats the problem. Has anyone else had this problem, is it easy to fix, any advice would be helpfully...Emma

im always stopped when i change back into first
coz its hard to change (no grinding though)
when i change into reverse i have to be stopped
otherwise it will grind
i think it is normal and you just have to get used to driving like it is

synchronise it yourself by rev matching to road speed

yeah, she grinds from 2nd to 1st unless ya time it just right, don't think there's synchro on 1st... normal as far as i know mate, one of the joys of owning a zook

There is a synchro on first (well if there is not mine never made horrible noises so I assumed that there was) ... it sounds like it's time for a new set of synchros and bearings while your at it ..
It may be something much simpler like your clutch needing adjusting, I would look at that first ..

i think it's normal... you shouldn't be dropping down to first on the fly very often anyways (just like reverse)...

The VMX80 will definatly help, might not cure but its worth a go. I had a Honda civic that would not change from 3rd back to 2nd unless you were completly stopped, put the VMX in, and you could change back to 2nd at 80k's with no sign of a crunch. I also put it in the zook last weekend and the gearbox is much quieter now. It is good stuff.

My bet is that the pressure plate fingures on the clutch is getting old and the clutch unit needs replacing.
Do the oil even if it isn't the prob, coz it most probably needs replacing.

I would definately check and change the oil first.
btw suzuki boxes do have syncro's on first gear, after the last cruiser park outing started getting hard changes back to first and grinding when i checked the oil it was a grey colour from all the water in the oil.
Changed the oil and problem dissapeared within 1 day.

Its good for the transfer also, But I just seen castrol also have a full synthetic gear oil that should be much better ?? its $25 per ltr at super cheap auto.
