Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi, just purchased a rd 135 for my gu ute rear. am going to tackle the installation myself after the assing about ( of which i not going into atm as will need a month to list the drama) i got when i had a front fitted few weeks ago.
mates a fitter whos worked in dock yards for lotta years so between him and myself ( grown up round mechanical shit ) hoping will have enough nouse to nut it out.
im starting it friday just thought i drop a thread to ask if there is any curve balls that isnt outlined in the instructions i should look out for?

my main concern about the install is the backlash and bearing preload. mates loyds certified so he's got a pretty comprehensive tool kit with A+ quailty gear ( dial indicators , torque wrenchs etc)

im yet to pick up teh lcoker ( tomorrow) and hoping teh preload settings /values are in the locker installation manual if not does anyone know what they should be? as my truck hasnt yet passed 30,000klms and dun wanna fark the ring adn pinion gears.

any info woudl be great

Anybody "can" fit a locker,but it doesn't mean they should.
Arb airlockers get such a bad name because people "think" they know what they are doing.and they make small mistakes that lead to problems like air leaks and oil back up the lines,as well as crownwheel/pinion/bearing issues.

When fitted properly they will last the life of the diff.

However if you are doing it yourself the most important thing is carrier bearing preload.
You need plenty of preload but it must be the same amount on each bearing while maintaining the correct backlash.
If you don't get enough preload,the hemisphere will "walk"in the housing,which WILL kill the orings and result in an air leak or oil back up the lines.this is the most common cause of all airlocker problems that i fix.

Also,the seal housing runs REALLY CLOSE to the crownwheel side of the diff.Be very cautious when running tube.
The seal housing must be free to float on the airlocker,but not to loose or it will leak air or get oil back up the line.
Be very careful putting the diff back in the car,they are very heavy and one small bump on the seal housing tube will push it against the diff.

These are just a few things that people commonly do wrong,as well as lots of other traps along the way.

measure the preload and backlash before you take it apart. write them down, then put it back together with the same. if you're installing with new carrier bearings (a good idea) add 10 - 20% to what you measure before you take it apart. remember when you measure carrier bearing preload you're also measuring pinion bearing preload unless you remove the pinion so a small change in reading can be a large change in preload.

you will need a big vice to hold the diff in while you work on it.

the instructions that come with the locker are quite comprehensive, if you have the tools and follow the instructions you should be pretty right.
