turning 2wd in to 4wd?

i just want to know if its possible? if so what will i need? its a 08/09 ford ranger singel cab tray back with a 2.5 turbo diesel. and if i sorce all parts how much would a shop charge to do the conversion.

Most late model jap utes are built on a similar platform for ease of construction so I'd imagine it's just a matter of removing and replacing a few parts....
No idea as to cost.. I don't think it'll be cheap unless you can get used parts from a wreck/er somewhere.

well what parts would i be looking at? frond diff, 4x4 gearbox and tranfer case, front hubs, auto locking hubs???

DOes it come in a 4wd option?
Chances are selling yours and buyign the 4wd would be as cheap with less headaches.
eg, tehre wouldnt be many 08/09 in wreckers to get 4wd spares from, and if there was, it would command top $$

lots to think of, is there space for a 4wd shifter inside the cab?
Will a Tcase fit without hitting body?
front diff etc, what a nightmare that could turn into to fit... arms, etc etc.

Buy a 4wd version of what you want.... a conversion will be way too expensive and difficult... my 2c

Usually the entire front suspension is different.

By the time you've changed everything necessary, it'd be easier and cheaper to just buy a 4wd.
Of course if you really need a hobby, then go for it. :cool:

nah i dont need a hobby haha i train 6 days/12 hrs a week, and dont like messing around with the new stuff :) thanks for the info guys i will look in to it more but i think its kinda straght forward the 2wd and 4wd models are identical besides hight and front trive train. the barnd new triton 2wd use 4x4 front hubs but with no diff or shafts going in to them.

The chances of doing it cheaper than just buying a 4WD one are very slim. Depends how much you enjoy red tape too, as it would need a mod plate.

if it was the hi-rise 4x2 than it could be done, but i suspect it is the lowered 2wd version and everything is different.
lwb 1.6efi,4sp auto,f&r airlockers,dual t/cases.custom coils.builder of ROAD LEGAL custom suzukis...and other stuff.

LMAO the 2wd and 4wd ranger have a completly different engine.(unless its a high rise 2wd with a 3L) Its more then a "front diff and suspension lift".
By doing it you would be wasting your time. If you wanna trade yours in on a 4wd (it would be cheeper, easier and have some resale value down the track) give me a pm

i have herd so rangers getting bad fuel econ and they why i am worryed about trading it in hahah cause i got lucky and got a good one it get over 700ks out of 52ltr dont want to trade it in on one that is getting shit fuel consumption but if its not possible or not worth it then there is no point in doing it.

There's a good chance yours has different chassis, brakes, diffs (ratios), crossmembers, the lot. You're going to have to practically buy a 4WD Ranger to source all the stuff needed. You'll need gearbox, transfer, interior stuff like new center console/s, wiring harness to suit the 4WD gear, driveshafts (rear will be shorter), probably different sway bars.... Thats off the top of my head and cutting it short.

It'll also need engineering and Transport approval etc....


Not trying to be sour, but honestly it's a waste of money and time just because yours gets good economy. Mostly of which probably comes from the fact you have a lighter 2WD, without the 4WD driveline and bigger tyres anyway ;)

I'd go either a triton or a BT50/Ranger

Stick a rear diff locker in it.
I heard that someone once put a diff locker in a 2wd navara and it performed as well as a 4wd

But I think He Had A Donar Car Realy Welldone the Result were cool and More Power To Him But Fark that For something to do In your spare time

mmm not too sure about the Navara D22 chasis but could be used in the gen2/3 pathfinder and other models.

The Navara D21 chasis is the same for 720, Terrano, Terrano 2, US/AUS Gen 1 Pathfinder, there's 6 petrol engines and 2/3 diesel emgines that are used in all the different model lines.

Some of the mounts across the D21 line are a bit different bewteen 2wd and 4wd, but I think this is to properly support the different body weights than 2wd/4wd setups.

Though far easier to just buy what your wanting rather than getting something your not quite wanting and living with it.

Yes... believe it or not 4x4 Rangers are available with 2.5 or 3.0 diesel engines..
My father ordered his last month.. Delivery is 15th of this month. He optioned 3.0 at a $1850 premium over the 2.5.
