TB42 Fuel Economy??? OR just put in a V8??

Im looking at a TB42 engined GQ ute, my question is, what sort of fuel economy are people getting?

Is it actually cheaper to run a V8 than one of these?

It does come with LPG, but I was looking at either Turbo TB42 or injected 302 windsor also on LPG?

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Dano.

It wouldn't suprise me. Expect 20+ L/100km on average. Mines up near 30L/100km at the moment, but it needs a tune badly..

tb42 will go like stink, the 302 will do the job. both a lot of work and just as expensive as each other.

tb42 turbo lpg will be economical untill you put that boot in, 302 on lpg will be good all the time until you abuse it..

depend what you want out of it..

Hey Teamrpm,

Power and some fuel economy.....Is it too much to ask?

It would be dirven daily, probably 25 - 30,000 klicks a year, and also driven as a weekend warrior, playing in the sand and on the rocks, mostly.
As long as the power was on just before 2000 revs its all good!

I know the TB 42 is a fossil of an engine, but with some flow work done to the head and port matching etc, could it be better on fuel/LPG? Not forgetting that there will the a snail hanging off the side.

Cheers, Dano.

don't bother with the head work, you won't notice the difference, turbo is a good option though as long as its an efi motor or unless its straight gas.

I wont notice the difference in fuel economy or power?.....or both? LOL

I was thinking of running it on straight gas, are the valve guides/seals hard enough for this?

Cheers, Dano.

turbo tb on petrol
runs 25L per hundy on 37s and std 4.11
booting it look at 30-39

Goes well, and she loves it
oil changes every 2000-5000 or if i dont like the oil color.

Don't bother going gas on a efi motor, whats the point..... stick with petrol, get a good fuel set up/surge tank, and good injectors/computer/tune and enjoy the power. Gas is for tight arses and carbie 4.2. Gas burns the valves out...

My tb42 will stomp on a hell of a lot of carbie v8's. I'm yet to take on my mates LS2 powered GQ, but i'm sure it will be close.

have a play with the turbo option and if it goes bang, then look at a v8..

Thanks for the reply, good info.

The reason I'm talking gas, is it's already on gas and I'm quite sure it's a carby. It's a 94 model, does anyone out there know if the 94's are carby or EFI? At that age I would have thought it to be an EFI.
