GQ Pinion flange removal - without a rattle gun??

I've spent the weekend swapping in some 4.3 centres to replace my 3.9s in my GQ.

Centres swapped over easily enough and then I tried undoing the pinion bolts to swap the rear flanges over. I can't get enough leverage nor hold the pinion still enough to budge it. Bent a couple of bars trying. Tried belting it with a large hammer too. Can't get either centre to move.

Is it possible to remove this bolt without the use of a rattle gun?

The good service manual says hold the pinion flange still with a pair of vice grips and simply undo the bolt. Not even close to working for me unfortunately.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Adam.

you need a LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE breaker bar

and a long bit of pipe with 2 holes in the end that you use to bolt up to the flange.

easy after that.

jam a breaker bar in there and drive forward (i think it was forward) VERY SLOWLY in 4WD. Reverse to tighten

Well, I got it undone. As Jes suggested, 6 foot crow bar attached to my spanner, smaller crow bar wedged on the chassis. Was still quite a struggle using a 6 foot lever. I tried jacking the end of the spanner at one stage. The back of the car was lifting by just the spanner on the bolt without undoing it!! (probably not the safest way of doing things)

Anyway, 4.3s in now. Very happy. Sitting on about 2000 rpm at 100kph (according to GPS) rather than the 1750ish that it was doing before. Less laboured take-offs and the auto gearbox does less hunting for gears. Should tow the camper trailer a bit better now. Speedo is out by about 10kph now though.

Cheers for the suggestions.
