the 3rz clutch is the one u want to use, iv never done a 3rz into a v6 runner, but im guessing it will need the mounts moved like other luxs and runners.

as said use the 3rz clutch, its very unlikly that the mounts will be in the correct position.

ok thanks i read somewhere that u can weld a 10mm steel plate on the existing mounts then just re drill the plate is this correct? and any idea witch way thay have to go furth back or forward? thanks for the help

We were going to do the 10mm plate idea when converting from 22r to 3rz to avoid cutting the mounts off. in the end it was to much mucking around to do this, though i think smaddock did this when converting his. From to 22r to 3rz we ended up moving the mounts back 65mm but yours will be differnt. Cutting the mounts off the chassi and bolting them onto the engine then bolting the gearbox cross member back up will determine where yours sit, then weld them on where the sit on the chassi. Mine was pretty close to firewall and a body lift wll help, i had to modify my exhaust manifold because it was to close to the firewall. These are things to consider.

ok mate cheers how hard r the mounts to cut off? can u buy new mounts? i have a 2inch body lift. do u have any pic of your engine bay?
Posted: Wed Jul 08, 2009 8:21 pm
by johno88
there not to hard just take your time and grind/gut the welds off with out cutting the chassi, that way you wont draw much attention to the fact they have been moved.Yes you could buy new engine mounts but what for?

Not the clearest pic. There would be heat issues with the hand brake cable buts it wrapped in some heat proof stuff, ill be making a heat shield soon though.

How much do the mounts need to be moved on a LN106? Wouldn't mind getting mine moved so they are ready for the engine.

and his the one of the engine mounts.

It is about 65mm back. I find the best way is the way johno88 described. its very easy to do, and with it done this way, u insure they are in the perfect spot for removing n installing the engine, when i undo the engine mount to chassis mount bolts, i can slide them straight out. Something i have never had with a engine mounted from the factory.
This is how I do it, im sure there many other ways tho! Bolt the engine to the gearbox, lower both into engine bay and get the gearbox bolted to the mount. Sit the engine down with the mounts bolted on untill the mounts sit on the frame, then line them up perfectly so the engines square and the bolts can go in and out easily(dont stress if u cant get it 100% sqaure, that what unis are for and ull find ur gearbox doesnt even bolt 100% in the centre), tak in place, unbolt the engine n lift it back up abit and burn them on, paint, lower engine back down n rebolt.

what gearbox have you got?
the v6 one will not bolt up to the bellhousing as they ran a r150

what have other people done in terms of the oil filter getting sodomized by the front diff?

not to sure what gear box i have its the standard one its a 1990 sr5 limited v6 4runner. what box do i have to use? will any hilux box and transfer bolt up? how would i use the standard 4runner gearbox? and i looked at my mounts i dont think i can cut them off and and move them as the upper arms r in the way.

You will need a G52 gearbox for the bellhousing to bolt up. Doesn't bolt straight up to a V6 gearbox. I think there's an adapter you can get from the states, but may be easier to source a G52 and bolt it in, others will need input on this as I'm not sure if its a straight swap...
As others have mentioned, I used 10mm steel plate welded to the engine mounts to line up with the chassis mounts. I only went this way as a mate is a fitter and measured it all up and took the engine mounts to his work to weld. Fitted up first time too! This was easier than crawling round in the engine bay cutting the mounts off, then lining them up and rewelding them on... I can't weld so it was up to my mate how to go about it! Either way, I don't care coz its engineered as is
As for the handbrake cable, mine melted after about 1/2 hour driving, so I fitted one from a V6 as these have the pulley inside the cabin on the firewall, so you may be right there. Body lift was also needed for firewall clearance at back of rocker cover, again you've already got this sorted.
Sounds like you should be right once you sort out the gearbox and engine mounts... small issues

your v6 box (r150 ) is a better box if you plan on running a turbo down the track
hang onto it and get the adapter bellhousing when you can afford it
dont bother splitting the box from the transfer just get complete unit not worth stuffing around and you will not pay much differnt at the wreckers
your v6 box is in high demand and is worth a lot more than the g series box
it is used for v8 conversions

ok where would i get the addapter bellhousing? dose any one have a link and price on one of these?

I've heard you can use the bellhousing off a current 2x4 Hilux to adapt the engine to the r box.

dose anyone have any info on this? what gear box is in the new hilux 2x4?

yeah the 2TR current 2.7 bell housing will work they use an R150 box

i tryed the new hilux and prado bellhousing and no luck dose anyone have any idea what i could use? i was told to use the new hilux 4x4 box that come with the 3rz 03model. would this gearbox and transfer fit in my 4runner? how much work is involved with crossmember and tail shats? thanks for helping

I dont really understand what you mean by"how much work is involved with crossmember and tail shats"?

Having a chain driven transfer, i'd just get a w56/w58 gearbox from a ifs 3rz 4x4 lux. Bellhousing etc will just bolt to the 3rz.

by boost=money
do the w56/w58 run a gear driven transfer? will this box bolt straight in or will i have to modify or replace the gearbox crossmember? will the tailshaft and front shaft fit as in lenth and bolt pattern? so im gesing the w56/w58 would be out of a 2003 hilux or there abouts the wreakers quoted me 1100 for box and transfer is about right?

Marlin crawler does a bell housing to fit a R series box to the 3RZ motor.
Why didn't the bell housing from the 2TR fit?
Was the input shaft a different lenght?
Interested in the outcome as i may be swapping a 5 speed and 3RZ into a 94 v6, auto 4runner.

the wreackes tryed it and said it dose not fit. and the clutch plate would have to b custom made. i was going to use the 03 box and transfer out of a hilux that came with the 3rz but not sure if it would bolt up to my car with crossmember. and tail shaft lengh is another thing i have to look into.

You can do some research and work out a clutch to work, using the pressure plate from the flywheel your using, and a plate that has the same surface area as the pressure plate face your using with the spline of the input shaft of the gearbox, exedy.com.au has all the specs on the site, but takes time to work out. Unless you order a specific clamp load and clutch plate material that's all they'll do and charge you $600 for it.
w56/w58 is chain driven, x member mount could be modded easy enough ( if it needed to be), and the shafts are just one of the joys of engine conversions. You should be able to weld the new mounts in to allow for any length differences so long as it is not a massive difference.
