front/rear axle winches in buggies

Hi all

i was watching a rockcrawling vid and watched some dudes with axle winches pulling down one end to climb/descend.

I was wondering, to save having a winch either end, would it be possible to have one in the middle with a rope going over the drum, but instead of one end of the rope attached to the drum and the other end going to the axle you attach one end of the cable to the front axle, run it to the winch, wrap it round half a dozen times, secure it to the drum, wrap it another half a dozen times then on to the rear axle.

So with the winch deactivated the axles sit neutral, winch in one way and the winch pulls down the rear axle and the front axle cable just goes slack, and if you winch the other direction the cable pulls down the front axle and the rear cable goes slack.

Has this already been done? I'm not a electric winch guy so i don't know if you can do this with an eleccy winch.

How do you pull both ends down at once?

Generaly you pull the front down for climbs the rear for decents and both for side slopes.

Sounds like alot of additonal work to me.
The price of a small wingh for the rear is not alot compared with the mucking about needed to select which end you want to pull down.
