I'm looking at buying an 88 model lux with 2.8 td with 5 speed box but the box has a tooth or 2 missing on a gear on the mainshaft. Soo I went down the local gearbox shop to get a quote for a reco exchange box r&r for a reasonable price. But he said that it will come with no warranty as he pretty much guaranteed me that the same will happen to the new box it's just a matter of when.
What do u guys think about this? Will it break in no time at all or are they pretty strong?
A few of my mates have t/d hiluxes and have no problems with the box at all..

Hilux gearbox strength

Every hilux gearbox (broken) that i have seen has taken a tooth off the cluster shaft (usually second gear). I recently saw a reco gearbox that had done a 150 kilometers (highway k's only) and broke the input shaft gear/1st gear. After a bit of a shit fight he was given the parts to fix it only. Apparently this reconditioning shop always put a new input shaft and cluster shaft (aftermarket from the looks!)
Apart from the reco box episode i haven't seen a hilux box fail without a bit of abuse. I don't think their the strongest box around. But there not that bad either. I'd be a bit wary of reco box's and get one with warranty!
