Just wondering....

Im after opinions on the best all rounder tyre offroad... - mud/rock/gravel with not a lot of road driving.

Lookin at ... JT2's, baja MTZs and a few others... But owning a patrol and a rockcrawler buggy in the past... obviously the weight plays a big part in traction for them.

So curious to see what tyres go on a lighter sierra.

FYI - I have a LWB

Swampers in the narrowest, tallest size you can fit.

Steve.

only thing is alot of them big name tyres dont make anything under a 31" tyre so u have to do a few mods to run the bigger tyre ot run something like a federal Couragia M/T i was going to try these

The couragia seems to be a good cheap muddy for the zook. The carcass has no where near the stiffness of a simex or bighorn even. Which means that you can run reasonable pressures to lengthen the contact pattern (bag out) at say 10psi.

I think most sierra owners are used to running single digit pressures in their tyres off road.

I think most cheap muddys seem to have soft carcasses. Most only run zooks on the weekend so even if you only manage to get 20-30k km off road in them that might last you 5-10 years.

Going to be a build thread? Having been impressed with your previous rides I'd be keen to see what you can come with in zook flavour.

Jt2's are awsome in the mud but your axles will snap like toothpicks on the rocks. I run maxxis buckshots as an allrounder and am very pleased with every aspect except onroad.

christover - how do you find the couragia on road? particularly in the wet??? and what do they measure in real world terms?

I'm running cooper STTs and have been incredibly impressed by them. a very good all terrain tyre - grips very well on road, great in mud, brilliant on rock and ok on sand... very skatey on gravel (but i think its my right foot thats causing the porblem there). They measure 30.7" for a 31 - thats including tread brand new.

The on road performance is very good, way better than I expected.
Wet or dry they are very precise, for an off road tread.
Noise levels are less than those made by all the other zook bits :)
Quite acceptable.

Off road I'm embarrassed to say I haven't used them much.
Long story, busy year :(
But they work great in sand, mud and rock.
Haven't tried wet rock yet.

Size was just over 30, a bit less than 30.5 when new.
Less than the mongrels, but ok

I'm happy.

My bro has couragias on an 80 series (in 287/75R16) and they are an excellent tyre. I would have bought a set myself if they sold 315/75! For cruiser as well.

But on my Sierra i run Silverstone Xtremes in 33x10.5". for a Sierra i wouldnt run anything else personally. Off-road they are just awesome. On-road, the only problem is the noise. They handle quite well and even with a locked rear diff and in pouring rain, it still wont lose grip around sharp corners unless you purposely try to!

It sounds like you know what you're doing, but if on a budget always gotta remember to factor in stuff like wider rims, body lift, brake lines, gearing, CV's and axles. Not all always needed, but its amazing how a "simple" tyre upgrade can cost $3-4000.

with the lighter sierra's i have seen smaller 30" tyres go better than 35s' cause they have more ground pressure to grip rocks than the bigger ones... but less ground clearance...

thats why steve etc are suggesting a narrow tyre - stops that floating effect and cuts in.

I think 31's are still the ideal size for a zuk... more than that and without a few hours travel you wont find any tracks that will challege you (at least in perth) and reliability etc do become a concern on zuk running gear. But then mines also my DD.
