Outer Limits 4x4 Board

this is the hardcore question of the day. we have an 09 outlander and there is nothing in the manual about setting the steering wheel stereo controls to skip through your preset stations, it scans them all when using the stereo controls on the wheel. when i picked the car up from a service i asked the guy at mitsubishi about it and he told me it cant be done, you need to change the channel via the 1-2-3 etc on the front of the head unit. is this correct? if it is, it is a major design fault.
