Has anyone put jeep diffs under a hilux
Has any one put some of these diffs under a hilux. Mines an ln65. Basically i want cheep and strong and as im about to go coils it would be easier to do the swap when i do the coils than later,
The information i have so far is they are dana 44 front and dana 60 rear, rear diff center on the axle, front diff drivers side of the axle, already has crossover steering, has 6 stud hubs, has about the same width WMS to WMS as the hilux. Theres still a few things that i need to work out but at the moment it looks like a feasable option over strenghtening the hilux diffs. The hilux is planned for a V6 conversion and comp use and a big to the fellas in the jeep section.

This was such a silly Idea I had to read this thread ...
The most piss poor part of a Jeep is it's diffs so the only reason might be that a Jeeper has taken them out and doesn't want them.
Admitted Dana 60's are pretty tough but so bloody huge.
My 2000 Hilux (ex IFS) is running HZJ75 axles and CVs in Prado live axle housings and hi pinion diffs with coils all round. works a treat. My present problem is that the diff ctrs keep working loose from the diff housings. Will announce solution once I've nutted that one out.
Now started work with the engineer to fit LS1, Turbo400 and GQ T'fer case and we are planning on keeping the Prado Diffs at this stage given I stick with the 35's and dont go silly with 37's.
I think that the sooner you forget about the Jeep parts the better.

-Remove the studs
-Run a tap through the holes in the housing
-Clean the inside face of the housing with a small file
-Install grade12 Button head cap screws in from the INSIDE of the housing, turning the threads into 'studs' which cannot pull out, and have such a high tensile strength that they won't stretch and come loose.
-Use high-tensile nuts only!

Ummm ok. Like i said in the first line this has to be cheep, Free axles are cheaper than $3000 plus to strenghten and convert to crossover steering on the current front end. Only reason I thought about this is they are free.Hobzee wrote:This was such a silly Idea I had to read this thread ...

Nice one greg - would you suggest upgrading to larger size bolts too? Was also thinking of tapered cone type washers similar to hubs.

hpd 44 and hpd 60s are ace diffs with heaps of after market support and a huge hoice of ratios , lockers , high steer arms available they are a good diff
and the unis in the hpd 44 axles are pretty good and can be repalced with longfield unis or ctms for added strength .only thing i dont like about danas
is the open knuckles if you do a lot of mud driving the axle tube fills with mud .

The jeep diffs that are fitted to that vehicle in their current state are going to be no stronger than a hilux diff. There also going to be the wrong ratios. You will spend more upgrading the strength on them than you will on the hilux gear. The front diff out of the jeep isnt worth touching. You can make the hilux front diff stronger than the jeep front diff using aftermarket parts. Even stronger than a built D44. The rear jeep diff could be built stronger but the only part your going to end up using is the centre section of the housing. Your going to need to replace the gears, hemisphere, axles and axle tubes to make anything decent out of it.
7-8 years ago a D44 was a good upgrade in a hilux but since then there are some really good aftermarket parts available that bolt straight into/onto the hilux housing to make them even stronger than the strongest built D44.

a mate with a CJ7 who owns a jeep mechanics place always breaking axles. he upgrades and still twists them.
for the trouble to convert you wont be gaining much if anything.
and if you are going to upgrade the jeep diffs, why not just upgrade the toyota ones?
in short, old jeep diffs are crap.
thats where i was getting my info from. and the hubs on the old jeep diffs seem to die alot.

That is the kind of info Im after, At the moment (if ever) I wont be strenghtening diffs, I simply can not afford it. If the jeep diffs were a stronger unit they would be going in there. Seems there not, so i wont fit them. I have access to all the tools welders, lathes, steel, any equipment i need so making them fit would cost me just my time. So Ill stick with my diffs, Ive got a heap of spare axles and a spare diff so Ill use them up.
