Just to add mt 2c to what 383FJ45 said.

The new electric systems do not resemble efi on petrol engines.

The trend is to higher injection pressures to meet new european emmission requirements. Much higher than from the mechanical injection pumps. Some have camshafts and rocker arms that operate a plunger that produces the pressure in the injectors (eg Rover TD4. 5 and 6). Some use hydraulics to also produce the pressure within the injectors.

In crude terms, the electrics control injection timing advance and duration by spilling fuel from the plunger.
