*HELP NEEDED* Front diff

Hi all,

Need a little help, thought i would tap into the wealth of knowledge that seems to be readily available through this forum - so thanks in advance for any input.....

Got the bud's customs treatment a little while ago (could not be happier with the work or the outcome - perfect), and for the solid axle swap i used a front diff i tore down and rebuilt. unfortunatelty i havent had much time behind the wheel since, and have not had the chance/need to lock the hubs untill this weekend on fraser island. Thus the reason for this post - there is something very wrong that i didnt pick up before while driving in Low range HUBS UNLOCKED (its is a manual, gear driven transfer 2.4 td hilux)

If i put the tranfer into high rage 4wd or low range, the tranfer in engaged and the front driveshaft turns. i can hear the driveshat totating as the drivelina angle is a little much - but i dont get shakes or wobbles and i can drive down the beach at 60 kph with no problems.

If i then lock either the left or right hub (NOT BOTH) and drive, it is also ok.

HOWEVER, if i lock both hubs and drive it is almost unbearable and impossible to get past 2nd or 3rd gear. It feels as though the diff is going to tear its self from the U-Bolts and sounds as though i have rocks rolling around under the truck. It feels as though i am driving with a drivelin angle closer to 45 degrees as i can notice the movement on the diff with each rotation of the wheel/centre. If i then shift the transfer from low or high range 4wd to high range 2wd (i.e. disengage the front diff) this noise/movement is still there and the front shaft is still engaged. it seems i am only able to disengage my front end by disengaging my free wheel hubs.

I have concluded that the problem relates to my hubs and not necessarily my third member - but if there is anyone that could shed any ligh on this issue at all, please let me know, any advide would be great before i tear the front end down again.

*buddy - could this have anything to do with the "not so clean" thrust washers we used on the front end?

Thanks in advance,

Mitch

The thrust washers would effect the wheel bearings. Come out so I can check everything over for you.

Cheers

Sure Bubs has it in hand but also check your uni's. I have seen this happen when people have put the shaft back on out of turn ie they didn't mark it and it came apart.

thanks for that mate,

Can you explain a little more? i have a feeling its something i probably did......when i took the joints out i dismantled then and made sure they werent worn, then i rebuild the birfields and slid them back into the diff housing. I didnt realise they had to be marked and match up.

Thanks agin

Mitch is not coming around tonight, and you have brought up a very good point. I did not rebuild the front axle and in such never checked the front ratio.

At least your there to back up your work or at least check it if there is any dramas. Says alot about the quality of work you do.

deffinately sounds like different ratio's to me. The bind up is causing the highly angled unis to clack and click.

that does most def sound like different ratios, spesh if u are not having the problem with only 1 hub locked in(usuming u have a open front centre). Buddy will get to the bottom of it so i dont think you have much to worry about

Thanks for all the input fellas. Buddy had nothing to do with the front end rebuild - but i know he's good to lend a hand when someone needs it. Different diff ratios was definitly the first thought that crossed my mind.....I might have put too much trust in the bloke that sold me the front and rears.

I wont mention your name on the forum, but if the so called "rebuilt and good condition" centers u sold me happen to be differnent ratios ill be dropping them off at your door this weekend.
