zd30 air box to gq with v8 conversion

when fitting zd30 airbox to Gq tb42 with v8 conversion, how is the box secured & where do you put the charcoal canister. :cool:

dont run a charcoal canister and dont run a zd30 air box run a donaldson or a commodore one

i thought zd30 boxes flowed really well!

Can you give more info why not to use the zd30?

Which model commodore and where do you mount it?

if your planning to run anything much more than a stock v8 i wouldnt use a holden airbox, i have a gq with a holden v8, it has been stroked nothing radical tho and the airbox is too restrictive. so im in the process of looking for a more suitable setup up to give me the flow i need, i also want to run a snorkel.

i am also looking for an airbox setup for my gq patrol with inj 5ltr..

i want to run a 4" snorkel into it aswell, muzz82 is your t/b right near the p/s pump making it a prick?

i have a 355 with comodore air box been drilled out and 4 inch in and out no problem also have used a donaldson moving overflow bottle down behind headlight..

I'd be interested in why not too. I'm not going looking for it, but i'm certain i've seen +150rwkw TD42T's running these boxes, and albeit 800cc smaller in displacement, diesels need to flow quite a lot more than a petrol.

If someone wants to do the maths, a typical hypo TD42T runs up to about 4000RPM, between 15 and 30psi.

I've just got a ZD30 unit to use on my 4.8. There are mods to get them to flow better. If the plumbing for the ZD30 unit and the 4.8 are similar sizes from the factory, why wouldn't it be adequate? Sure, it may not flow enough at higher revs, but I'll deal with that when I can confirm it's too small.

And yes, diesels need more air, so I am guessing that a 4.2 diesel and 4.8 petrol have similar airflow needs. And since the ZD30 one flows more than the 4.2 one, I must be close to the mark.

i've got a turbo petrol, making anywhere upto 180kw atw.
Should that flow enough for it?

What are the other option to fit easily behind the headlight?

the stock VS V8 air box flows more air then the ZD30 one, even with the billet top as seen on patrolforum.com

the VT are box is better.

would tend to agree on this one, even though i just fitted up a zd30 airbox to my 5.0l.much neater in the gu then the holden air box!

the 5.0l box has a bigger cut out section for breating air although it does suck hot air from the engine bay and the bottom half of the air box is only about 60mm deep which would only allow a small diameter piece of ducting to the outside(snorkle/gaurds) hence why i changed!
after doing the air box and removeing the air con condenser core my truck runs a bit cooler!

there may be other/better ways but i like the way it turned out!

the base of the air box isn't the reason it flows well. the lid is the reason it flows well.
the base is the same as the V6 one, but the V6 air box has a square lid and doesn't flow well.

either way, the element is only small and will clog with dust at twice the rate of the VT one. or the ZD30 one.


I was under a 96' model Mitsubishi Canter today, it looked as though the airbox from that would actually flow quite well, 3inch inlet and well radiused 3inch outlet. filters were well priced too.

Going by the concertina fold count and length, there's a significant difference between a V6 Commodore panel and a ZD30 cylinder filter. Are the V6 Commodore ones similar to the V8 units?

VN to VS v6 and v8 air boxes all the share the same lower half and filter.

personly i'm not sure about vt onwards. i do know that both the v6 and v8 vt on air boxes are about twice the size of the pre VT ones.

Being that the VT was fitted with both the holden 5L and chev LS engine i'm not sure if there are any differences here.

but the V6 being teh most common would be easier to get.

Had a play today. Canister went next to the dipstick (not me) but remember mine is GU with 4.8. At first it went next to the ABS module. But I am trying to leave that hole vacant for a compressor, otherwise It fits perfect. That's where I had it to start with and it fits real good with the factory mount and hoses.

It is now next to the dipstick and I just need to get a couple of metres of hose to plumb it up. Then I'll get the ZD30 aircleaner and matching coolant bottle and it should all work.

Oh, I also had a VT air cleaner laying about so I had a play with it too. It would fit real nice but not sure on where the battery tray would come to. I don't think it fits with a dual battery setup but hopefully these pics show otherwise.

I personally wouldn't run the Commodore airbox (any of them) as I reckon they don't seal very well around the edges of the filter, especially the VT shape boxes that run the A1358. I'd stick to a 4wd type airbox that runs a decent element designed for offroad applications (dust).

Has any1 actually commented on how the ZD30 airbox mounts in a GQ. Does it bolt strait up or do you need a plate made up or what?

Bolts straight in. Nissan was even kind enough to have holes in the inner guard already drilled for us.
