75 Series Gearbox Issue

Post by Drift Technician »

Hey guys.

Got a H55F box in my 75 series cruiser (2H Turbo) and it seems to be making noise from the shifter when driving in 4th and 5th.

Quite loud noise and is worse when pressure is put on top of the stick, but only seems to do it in 4th and 5th gear.

Any ideas?
If its not upside down and on fire, I'm not trying hard enough.......

Is it a whine or more of a grumble?

Dump the oil into a clean container ( one for g/box and another for transfer) to check for steel etc. Drop the pto cover off and have a feel of the gear on the mainshaft closest to the g/box for slack in the spline.Very common on that modle box, especially an early one like yours.

Is this adjustable or is a new spline required?

You have to pull the tranfer apart to get at it. If the spline is buggered then you have to replace the gear with a MOD32 gear from don kyatts and put it all back together. Then the transfer case may be worn and need parts. If your not confident then i wouldnt recomend trying it yourself.

Ok thanks for that man.

Is the 60 series box the same box and a direct bolt in?

No worries. Yeah the 60 box is the same provided it hasnt got the vacuum operated 4wd selector on the front side of it at the top of where the front drive shaft comes out.

I have been offered a petrol 60 series box quite cheap, is it a simple case of being able to just swap bellhousings over if there is no vac operated selector on the box?

sounds like its the lay shaft ..case hardening is worn off causing whine it will do it from about 80km/h and will get worse/ louder/ more able to hear it at lower speeds the more you drive it thats my bet ......
i dont know where you are mate but the gearbox factory in greenacre sydney will rebuild both xfer and box for about 1500 they did mine just pull them out as a unit together and freight to them 1 week turn around
