Hilux need decompression for turbo?
I've been told that i may need to lower the compression of my 2.8D hilux before adding a turbo.. is this true?
i've been told to put a thicker seal inbetween the tappet cover and the head, is that enough?
i have everthing else sorted out, just need to no if i have to sort this out before i set the turbo up.

Putting a thicker seal between the tappet cover and head will do Jack to the compression. A thicker shim and head gasket is whats needed to reduce compression. You shouldn't need to lower the compression on a diesel to fit a turbo. Diesels have such a high compression poking another 10psi in there wont hurt.

I just put a turbo on my 2.8 and new head i didn't worry about the shim just put new head gasket' i'm running a conservative 8psi which keeps Egt down to below 500deg. Before and after dyno gave it a 37% power increase.. NO MORE CHANGING DOWN ALL THE TIME OR MORE TAKING HILLS IN 2ND I CAN NOW KEEP UP...
I'm guessing it's an aftermarket turbo conversion as no 2.8 was turbo from factory.
If they are the same engine, then should swap over fine.
The turbo one should have a boost compensator on it to increase fuel as the turbo spools up. May need a vac/boost line for it
If theres nothing wrong with your pump why the change ? You will get a few horses and less black smoke (till the turbo spools up) from the turbo's pump but that's bout it.

Only factory 2.4TD Hiluxes I know of are in Surf's.
Depends which 2.4TD
If it's from a 2.4TD, 2LT (before 8/90 ?), then will be all good just check out any vac lines running to the pump for the compensator.
If it's from a manual 2.4TD, 2LT-E (has EFI on the crossover pipe), then no ..... unless you use the ECU, fit a CAS to the side of the block and change the crank to suit the CAS + some wiring to stop it throwing codes.

post pictures of both pumps and we can tell whether its worth swapping them or not. its not a small job, special tools are required to get the timing right, you need a puller to get the drive sprocket off etc..Matt_85Lux wrote:Thanks for the Info, I'm pretty sure it isn't the 2LTE as it is an 85 model lux.

All this destruction of g52 box's if you drive like a d!ck you will break anything, i've PERSONALLY seen g52s take alot more torque than a 2.8td could dream of and have no problems, also for longer than a few weeks.
I think you talking about a 1kzte, which is a 3.0 diesel not a 3L.
