DX to GXL conversion 80 series

Post by midi73 »

Does anyone know if the DX 80 has all the plug ins etc already in the harness to put on and operate GXL doors, or will I need to swap harnesses as well? Also what would be involved in putting a GXL instument cluster into a DX, apart from changing wiring harness.
Cheers.

petrol or diesel?

some of the wiring is there, a lot of it is not. the main harness is probably approximately the same for similar build dates but there are lots of little changes year to year (even month to month) so it's not a simple conversion by any means.

if diesel, the most difficult part of converting to the tacho instrument cluster is removing the fuel pump, disassembling, drilling and tapping, reassembling, installing the tach sensor, calibrating, installing and timing the pump. (the good news is that the wiring for the tach sensor IS there).

the alternative is finding a pump off a RV/GXL or from a 75 series and swapping it over.

the only wiring you need on a 1HD-T for it to run is the starter and the fuel shutoff (ignition +) so to get it in and running, pretty easy. same gearbox, not sure on the engine mounts but they are easy to move if you need to.

The dx has the front window wiring, the rear is missing....not too hard to graft in....rear view wiring is there aswell, just need the switch, intermittent wipers is there, just need the gxl switch, wiring for dash is there...just need the right dash...pre 8/92 have spedo cable, post have electric spedo, and new plugs...post 2/95 have lights in different places, all 3 are not swapable...now....u say dx and also mention the dash, so i guess you have the later dx which is infact the vinyl/pov pack , (from 93 to 96ish, the dx was a gxl upgrade, but sometime around 96, the dx was made the pov pack with no tacho or cloth)

Thank you Andrew and everyone else foryour replys.
I havent actually got an 80 yet. I am looking to get one. I want the tscho dash and all the electrics of a GXL. I also want the turbo diesel. But they are shit loads dearer. I ask because I could get a dx diesel and upgrade the interior, or the petrol GXLs are realy cheap for good cars, so I would look at putting a turbo diesel in one of them if not to hard.
Dont know where I could find one do you Andrew. A duel cab would be good just to through another spanner into the mix lol.
Cheers all.
