Got the Beasty Home HELP

Ok bought this 91 GQ at auction over here, 24volt, 4.2 diesel.
1. What little oil was in it was like mud. What can I flush the engine with. Ive heard diesel or kero????

2. Starts and runs ok but revs are so low it stalls, what should I be looking for?

How much stuff would need to be changed to bring it 12 volt, i'm thinking right down to the wiper moter

Its a bugger because its a model we dont back in Australia, got all electric windows, rear air con. Its just been treated like shit and never had maintainence by the look of it.

I will leae the engine flush qn to others, personally I'd probably replace filter and oil and leave it at that.

FWIW my feeling is don't try to convert to 12V as it's a huge hassle and there is no really strong reason too. It would be easier and overall better to just set up a 12V system next to it for whatever 12V things you want to run.

Why do you want to convert to 12V?

mate over here we are awash with GQ safari's and 99% are 24V so you can get spares here if needed.
Don't try to convert, put a 60A inverter under the drivers seat and that will take care of your accessories - truckies have been using them for years.

As for winches - WARN do 24V units and being 24V they use 1/2 the current.

Just my 2c......

drop the sump..it'll be "chockers" with 'Kak', then kero clean oil galleries, fill with cheap oil run for 5 mins the dump that and put the good oil in with new filters.

good luck

x2

Or, if you're a tight-arse, get some cheap oil an a few sets of oil filters and cycle through two lots of oil before putting in some good quality stuff.

- Change your gearbox/transfer and diff (x2) oils too.
- Change your coolant
- Change the fuel filter as well.

Basically, just do all of the "normal" stuff you'd do to a second hand car after you buy it.

Good luck!

Thanks fellas,

The reason I was thinking 12 volt is that I brought my GQ tray back over with me. Its a very low K 4.2 turbo diesel and the running gear is like new. Was thinking of selling it and do some travel in the wagon but swap over all the running gear. Starting to look like a big job, was hoping maybe just the main compoents would get me out of trouble.

Might have stuffed up buying this bugger, never had one where the revs drop back so low, probably 300-400 instead of 800. I have filled have a 44 gal drum with rubbish ive emptied out of it, bloody shame its been a nice truck

cheers

See how it goes after giving it a good service. Might just need a nip up on the idle screw.

was thinking the same coxy,

I'd start with fuel and air. if you can turn it over with the glows out I'd doubt you have too much of a drama on your hands (if its manual)

If you were real keen i'd drop a main bearing shell off while the sumps out for a clean and give it a check...that'll pretty much tell you the whole story right there.

It aint that hard and you'll sleep a whole lot better ha ha

good luck

Thanks again, will follow that advice.

Going to get a key cut tomorrow, had take out the complete steering lock/ignition as there is something jammed in the back of the key slot. Tell ya what, took 10 minitues to take out the blind headed bolts that hold the steering lock in place. Would'nt secure the for long.

Garth what part of the North Island are you? if you dont mind me asking. I'm at Taihape, bought this thing from Turners at Tauranga

If you're going to be towing you can get a trailer plug coupling that converts from 24-12v too.

I wouldnt try and run it until I'd flushed thi shit out of the fuel system, the engine. Running sludgey oil thru it wont be doing anything any good.

By the sound of it theres every chance that the fuel filter will be chocka, if it is, then your injectors and pump wont be in good condition and theres some large coin there...

Take the filters off all round and test them.

also do diffs, transfer case, box etc...

I'd leave the ute alone and keep it, and part this thing out if its as bad as you make it sound.

Bogged, I might have gone over the top. But clearly it has'nt been well mainted.

I will work through everything like has been suggested.

The fuel filter looks near though, dont know how you would test it. Maybe it was the only thing he changed
