I have a leaky main seal in my 308, its a rope block.
With the motor out should i remove
sump,
timming cover and chain,
unbolt and push pistons to top of bore
take crank out.
Will this method work or create issues, this way i can leave pistons in bores heads and manifold on.
thanks

You can replace the rope seal by just removing the rear main cap. You just need the tool to do it which is kind of like a cable you pull the seal through with.

The rope seals i have fitted in the past to rebuilt motors have needed to be hit in a little, so i ddint think that i would be able to do it by dragging the new one through

I've done a rear main on a 253 without undoing conrods.. Just undo main caps and lift the crank just enough to get old seal out and new seal in.
The way you described will work though.

Agreed, lucky I don't own one. Just did my 1UZ, once the box was out it took all of a minute to pop out the old seal and in with the new :D
