Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just trying to research cfm's on certain fans out there. both the super cheap and auto barn 16" fans run around 1150 cfm, which is crap!
I had one and it seized up and melted all the wire's to it and was,nt even 12 months old. There are dearer options out there but i'm curius to see if there is a fan or two i could pick up at the wreckers that is cheap and flows high cfm. Any one got any ideas or stats on other fan cfm?

try looking at SPAL

Also be very carefull at the pressure drop the flows are quoted at... if the manufacturer can't provide flow graphs vs pressure drop then they are a joke.

SPAL is very good in this regard and you will see when comparing a SPAL against a "similar" Davis Craig the flows do vary considerably.

However SPAL aren't that readily available over here so if you want the full range - purchaing from the US direct is best. SPAL don't seem to sell to the public but i've bought of the net with no issues.

I know Ashdown/Ingram sell SPAL but they are pretty expensive.

I wouldn't skimp on a thermofan unless you want to have problems down the track (I learnt the hard way....) But, if you do your research and hunt at wreckers you can quite easily find a better quality fan than what davies craig sell.

Search for something off a larger capacity engine and see what you can find. Your stock radiator dimensions will be the biggest limiting factor and will determine if you can use something "popular" like an AU (or later) Falcon twin fan setup. They are a VERY wide fan assy and this might cause a problem.

For Spal I bought off http://www.univparts.com/ - they sell stuff on Ebay.com . It was relatively painless but the freight did cost me a few$$$ (luckily I bought when the exchange rate was 0.96 )

Just for comparison I just picked up my LS1's thermo fans and they look about perfect size for a Landcruiser 1hz size radiator. And very well built compared to the cheaper type fans. No idea about how much air they flow but i'm guessing it'd be a fair bit to keep the alloy v8 cool.

Well i'm starting to see alot of fans dont have sealed motors which seems to kill them the most. Found a mine rated one at 3000 cfm with sealed motor and gauranteed to 10, 000 hrs, but 450 a pop is steep to spend on the old lux.

I have non-genuine EL thermos behind a standard Rangie radiator cooling a 350. Cost about $200 new for the fans and shroud as a unit.

One fan is on all the time, the other is on a variable temp switch. Vastly superior to the stock Chev fan. Second fan virtually never needed.

Has clocked up 50,000 k's now with no probs. Just one fan on flows a huge amount of air compared with stock.

I agree, OEM out of a decent make of car, basically going for the biggest fan(s) you can physically fit should be pretty much as good as any aftermarket option would be.

Ended up with a dirty old super cheap special cos it was 20%off. So i'll worry about it when this one shites itself.

Would be even worse if it sucks........

From what i figure its a gammin 1150 cfm, but i also have a ten inch davies craig in front of that as well. Surely it should keep a 4y petty cool. ha ha.
