wiring spots

I want to wire my spot lights on a '92 2dr vitara so they will only go on when on high beam. I was looking at taking the relay activation wire off the wires where they enter the rear of the head lamp bulb. These wires appear to be live when the head lamps are off. I guess this means they are switched on the earth side?? Where is this tap usually taken from/ or where is a good place?

You are correct, the headlights are negatively switched.
Connect your test light to the positive terminal on the battery. Then switch headlights on highbeam and check which wire is earthed. This will be the headlight earth. You pickup from this wire and use it to earth the relay.
So on the relay you will have battery power to terminal 30, a jump from 30 to 85, lights connected to 87 and the headlight earth to 86. The relay will only be earthed when headlights are on and therefore only work with head lights on.

Just to clarify the wiring on the relay, by a jump, do you mean that 30 and 85 are connected with the power coming in on terminal 30? Could a switch also be wired into the power 30 circuit?

the wire from 30 has to go to 86 and the wire from back of head light to 85

It doesn't matter which way they go, you're powering a coil to create a magnet.

Yes, by a jump i mean the power to 30 also goes to 85.
You would switch the wire from the headlight wire to the relay
