Qestions about steering in a BJ40

Hi All
My BJ40 has a bit of play in the steering, it's not a lot but it's enough to annoy me. I was wondering if this is something that can be fixed easily (e.g. smaller steering wheel, a new damper or a new second hand steering box), if not, does anyone have any ideas on how to lessen the problem?
Or...
Should I just look into going power steering? if so, could anyone recommend someone in the Newcastle area that could do this?
Sorry for this simple question. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Matt

i'd start by replacing your rod ends and relay box if they are old.

well i'm out of ideas. on my 40 there was a little play in the steering. i think thats just the way it is with the way the steering is designed. short of doing as said, a power steerring conversion you might just have to get used to it if its not too bad.

From memory when the steering box gets sloppy you can get a bit of play lift up the bonnet and turn the wheel whilst looking how much the the flexible coupling moves should give you an idea if it is the box or not.
You can tighten up the box as well there is a screw adjuster and lock nut on the side might need to read the manual to work out the finer details. hope this helps.

i thought they had play in them standard?
but yeah a little tightening up.
atleast if theres abit of play it might not get reefed out of your hands as harshly.

hi man,
the relay rod from the steering box to the " idler box" at the front may be loose at teh steering box end.
as noted in another post, you need to get someone to swing the wheel lightly while you c heck for area's of play.
BUT
the origional steering with the multitude of relay rods will always be a PAIN in the arse for freeplay, and when they are good, it doesnt last that long without SLOP if you go offroad!! you are much better off installing a 60 series power steering box, that way all you have is the pitman arm and drag link
go the 60 series gear, you will NEVER look back.
