Hi Toyota owners,
Im not a Toyota owner(yet) but I was wondering if I could get some advise on what to lookout for when buying a used Hilux surf? Its not actually for me. It's for my brother in law.
We had a look at a couple today and they were the 2.4 turbo ones.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Rod

Ive owned one for about 3 years, very reliable car except for one little thing.
They have a remarkable habbit of cracking heads, if you don't mind throwing around 2700 bucks then it's not a worry. But if you are like me then it kinda sucks so you realy want to get that sucker checked out.
Mine got replaced with a 3lt head and I have never had a problem with it since then. Of road ability is directly related to how little you give a shit but basicaly as well as you can expect an IFS to go. Every time you give it a hard time book a trip to the wheel alignment specilist because the wheel alignment is now fucked. When I was driving mine off road I gave it a pretty hard time and nothing broke, just wheel alignment was shot every time without fail. Dumping the rear swaybar made a big dif to mine when I used to off road it as well.
All up not a bad 4b if you are not planning on going real hard and I find it very comfortable on the road. The head was the only major prob I have had with it, unfortunatly that was a real bad one.

I owned one for about two years, pretty good things for the price.
I never had a problem with cracked heads, i found out when i first got it that the thermostat is one for colder japanese climate, so it is important to replace it with a thermostat suited to Aussie conditions.
This may be the result for all the cracked heads.
I gave mine a hell of a flogging Off-road and busted three front diffs in the 2 years i had it.
Other than that their pretty good!!

Nah, I was told that the thickness of SOME of the heads where a little thin in places, also there was no temperature problems until it cracked, then it had a problem big time.. Mine looked like it was a little thin all over the bloody place, what a mess
Personal experience with surfs, I know of 4 surfs personaly. 2 of them had servere "shit my head just cracked" problems, the other 2 no problems. Also heard the figure to be one in five are up the shit. Don't know how acurate that is tho.
