guys,
i wanna change the old 5l donk on my 2000 extra cab lux.
i know there are quite a few conversions out there for luxes.
what i wanna know is what engine do you have, what extras besides the engine did you need to buy to complete the conversion and roughly how much did the whole lot cost, money doesnt worry me much.
any opinions welcome,
Cheers, Trent

holden 253 on gas/petrol, turbo 350 trans (broke the 5 speed toyota box) with marks transfer case adaptor. custom sump, custom engine mounts, pushed back firewall, modified ac box (because of firewall push), custom power steer lines etc etc
a lot of fu*king about to be honest

I was going to put a engine in my car (pay someone to do it)
All the quotes i got were 10 grand drive in drive out. Didnt really matter what motor. 1UZ, holden v6 or v8 etc.
I ended up buying a hilux with a Injected 5 litre in it already becasue it worked out cheaper.
So if money doesnt really bother you, expect 10 grand at least if your not doing it yourself.
As for the motor in mine. I havnt had it offroad yet, but on road it seems good. Doesnt overheat, good power and parts readily available for it

Also keen on a simular build and unsure on my options. I have a 2uz and auto lying around and I want to build a high speed comp rig and every day driver. I have seen 1uz's and holden 5lts but no 2uz's. I will be intersted to see how you go, or if anyone elso has seen or heard how much pain is involved.
Good luck,
Adam.

just remember about the whole emissions thing and what engines u can actually engineer if its a 2000 model ur not gunna get away with a 1uz or a commo v6 or v8 unless its the series 3 5.0 or the emotech v6, then again the twin turbo ls7 would be hard pressed to get engineered lol

can always give the twin turbo ls7 a go
would be one of a kind, does marks adaptors do a adaptor for the gears boxes? or changes out the gear box as well?

I have a meeting with engineer this week to discuss getting my 2000 lux engineered to get it registered (ex Qld (Big Al's) live axle job) and to discuss the V8 arangements. I am putting up the idea of 5.7 with Turbo 400 and GQ t'fer case - I am crossing to the dark side and grafting cruiser centres into my prado housings - means less clearance I know but I'm thinking the 5.7 would make light work of the 8" ring gears. Marks Adaptors are up for it. Want it ready by XMas for thrashing out bugs before 2010 Outback Challenge.
Pretty keen to see what other lux guys are doing too.

Fairly sure that you aren't allowed to put an older motor in i.e. if it is a 2000 model can only put a motor found in a car of the same year of manufacture or newer. so a Holden 5litre is out as they were outed in 99, 2000 saw the release of the Gen3, but could still go a ford series 3 5Litre, a 5.4L from BA onwards or a late model ecotech or the alloytec

I have an EFI Holden 5.0 in mine (4 Runner, but the same vehicle really).
I have done 2 Holden V8s into 4 Runners now and it very easy the second time round or with advice from people who have done the engine swap you are doing.
It cost me about $8k to do it myself but that was with a $2.4k engine and custom headers and exhaust. It can be difficult at times but I think the 5.0 is a good engine for the hilux vehicles.
I don't want to start a 5.0 V lexus discussion but the 5.0 is a much better fit IMO from a size point of view.
Here is a link to my conversion and one I am helping another guy with on the Surf site, plenty of good info over there that is specific to this or any hi lux conversion really.

I know that the 5.0 can be engineered in Vic as can the 308 as long as it's on straight gas.
As I say just my opinion but we did a trip recently where we had 4 Holden v8 powered surfs at the same time and all are known to run well and reliably, especially in bush conditions wether it be dry or wet
Also if you have the dollars upfront you can convert the 5.0 to 355 Cui to get extra torque and put in some strong go fast goodies at the same time, the engineer would never know you stroked it either
Cheers

my old hilux had a 7MGTE, which i blew up, And then a 1JZGTE twin turbo 6. I would not recomend it because they are a very tight fit if you still have the rad up front (I didn't), And the torque curve was no good for 4WD.
If i was gonna do another engine swap in a lux i would go the holden 3.6 alloytec and auto (no one has an adpter to the lux manual) My reasons are:
-They are real cheap, around $2500 for engine, trans, ECU, loom, etc, and have low km's.
-They are fairly new technology, emissions no worries
-They make the same sort of power as an old 5L
-They are very tuneable with the right software (same as LS1)
-No worries with engineers
-Should fit pretty easy
-no-one has done it yet
If you are interested in going this way and looking to pay someone to do it, Send me a PM or call 0404811498, I would be willing to do a pretty good deal on labour on one of these as a R&D vehicle, And if i could put a sticker or 2 on the car. I am locted in QLD however.
