Front Rotors - Slotted or Cross Drilled

Ahoy.
The Rangie is up for new front rotors and pads.
A blessing in disguise as I'm moving up to 33's (std 29) and hoping to improve braking performance at the same time.
I'm considering DBA slotted discs and more aggresive pads.
The slotted disc is the same price as the OEM part!!
But what of Cross Drilled rotors?
Do they have any benefit over plain slotted?
I've heard they're not good for off road because debris may lodge in holes, reducing performance.
Repco 'Kevlar 4WD' pads have been recommended also.
Imporved feel along with extended life. Cheaper than OEM too.
Anyone have any feedback before I buy?
Thanks,
Hardy

get slotted only.
cracks eventually show up on crossdrilled rotors.
and be wary about what pads you use. As some pads are suited to certain types of rotors - may warp them or cause squeaky etc.
Just my 2c

I had DBA slotted on my Disco - lasted twice as long as OEMs. they're a good thing.
In theory mud gets into the cross drilled ones and wears the pads out faster.

I have seen cross drilled rotors removed after 1 day of track work with multpile cracks radiating from each cross-drill. They are for looks these days and even the guys from DBA were telling me they are for the street "boyz". Slots are stronger.

Have a look at EBC 4wd pads and slotted rotors, will cost a bit more but is worth it, I have been told the difference between them and other similar pads is huge.

I have just gone through the process of upgrading the rotors on my GU (long, embarrasing story that resulted in one of the OEM ones being rooted).
After asking around a lot, the general concensus was as the other have indicated - go the slotted only. DBA have stopped making slotted and cross-drilled for a lot of 4wd makes because reliability with cracking was a problem.
Do they offer better braking performance? Too soon for me to tell because I'm still bedding them in but with the sub par braking performance of the GU in the first place and the fact that my rig now wears 37's, I'll take whatever I can get.

Hmmm might cross drill my discs........So I can get slotted one sooner

Ripper, thanks fellas.
I noticed the EBC rotors have holes as well as slots, but the holes are blind. Probably more for looks but at least they shouldn't crack.
I'll give them a call tomorrow to compare price and suss out pad options.
Brembo also do aftermarket but couldn't find a local contact.
No matter.

Dont go with cross drilled i had slotted and cross drilled front and rear on my Cruiser 80 Ute and after one outing the pads were shot (Bendix Kevlar 4WD) the mud gets packed into the holes and grooves the pads, the pads lost about 50% of the friction area and wouldn't stop. Replaced all the brakes with slotted rotors and never had a problem since.

Slotted are good.
Plasma gas from surface escapes easily and crap flies out the side.
The slight wiping action of slot keeps pads clean.

I had Brembo cross drilled discs on a car a few years back with Mintex pads- never had any problems with cracking in 30000km. But what everyone is saying is correct and lots of people do find they crack. I ordered them from the UK, so can't help with a local contact.
If you log onto the MRT forums you'll find the head guy from DBA is a regualr poster on there - he often recommends disc/ pad combos. Could be worth joining and PMing him.

There was a big thread on WRX brakes- have a read of that and you'll work out which person he is.

I found that the only pads that did not give brake squeel on disco's and rangie's were the genuine ones at approx twice the price.
probably more of a concern for on road user's

I suppose you could call having wheels locked up solid by pieces of gravel jammed into the pads an increase in braking performance.

I run EBC Greenstuff pads which have never squeeled. I'm pretty sure they guarantee no squeeling. Great pad also. Towed a heavily loaded tandam axled trailer with failed brakes down through the steep windy bits inbetween Nowra and Moss Vale with great stopping power (limited by traction) and no fade at all. The Disco is on 33's also to make matters worse.

I've got the Greenstuffs on a road car and they are very good. They are a Kevlar composite material and generate very little (if any) brake dust.
Whatever you do though, don't use them with crossdrilled discs- they generate a lot of heat (compared to normal performance pads) and will cause crossdrilled discs to crack.

The bremos prolly never got dunked in a cold creek after a long downhill either.. From what I have been told that is what causes alot of issues with the cross drill rotors on 4x4's regularly used offroad ..

I wouldn't suggest doing that with any disc- you'll end up with warped rotors.

Well the deal has been done.
I've ordered EBC slotted rotors and matching EBC 4x4 Pads.
All up cost a little more than OEM parts, but feeling good about my choice.
(see what happens once installed)
Thanks for all help.

slotted only, cross driled allow crap into them and will crack and f*** the pads, use semi metalic pads for best performance with slotted rotors

BTW, avoid the EBC 6000 series Greenstuff 4x4 pads like the plague. They're crap. If you can get them the proper and good pads are the EBC 2000 series greenstuff pads.
Why they have 2 completely different pads called Greenstuff I'll never know.

slotted only, unless your running a track car cross drilled isnt worth it
