95 Dicso TDI timing belt or chain?

A young bloke at work has a 95 disco TDI and has been told timing belt is due for replacing, I'm not familiar with these engines but a quick look under the bonnet and I saw nothing related to a timing belt engine. What is the drive on these engines, belt, chain or gear?

belt it will be a 300tdi so will more than likely need the full kit (about $300)

Belt is fully sealed behind the cover where the fan is mounted, depending on the k's it will either require a full kit (belt / tensioner /idler/crank pulley ) or if it has been fitted with the upgrade kit previously then only the belt /tensioner /idler will suffice. But the full kit is cheaper than to buy the 3 parts separately . Kits on ebay are usually $250 including post. They are meant to be replaced between 60-80k.

You really should check what the issues are before doing this job on a 300Tdi.

Land Rover have a poor history after penny pinching with the components when they upgraded the 200Tdi.

Besides using the kit that cooter mentioned you must take care not to over tension the belt as it distorts the cheap and nasty pulleys, causing the belt to track off. The value given in the workshop manual is too high and was revised down in a technical bulletin (from memory from 14 to 11 nm).

It is easy to get the timing out by a tooth when replacing the belt. Make sure you turn the engine a couple of times and re-check the marks, before putting the front cover back on.

The nut on the front of the crank is very tight (difficult to undo) and it must be tightened correctly, or the harmonic balancer will flog out the keyway ($$$ for a new crankshaft)

There is good information about replacing the timing belt on the Difflock web site.

Thanks, everyone, what sort of time and dollars is he looking at to have the job done?

I think that is the only timing belt I have seen encased like that.

The case has a 1/4" bsp drain in the bottom. This takes a 'wading plug' for deep muddy/water crossings. In some 4wd situations it does make sense.
