1hz power steering pump..

Post by crunk81us »

I know this is a common problem.. leaking pwr str pump.
I know that it should be a fairly simple job to put a kit through it.. 100 bucks in parts and an hours labour.
What I cannot find is the instructions on how to do it. Anyone know of a link for how to rebuild the pump?

Where is it leaking, is it leaking ps fluid out or letting engine oil into the fluid. If its leaking ps fluid out it is a very simple repair and if your half handy you wont need a manual, just split the pump replace the o ring and bolt back together, if there is no eng oil in the ps fluid dont replace the seal, the experrt have trouble with them sometimes.
If your able to, when you have split the pump, get the o rings from a bearing shop.

it's pretty straightforward. disassemble taking note of how it comes apart, put it back together with new bits from the kit, reinstall. put some goo around the o-ring on the inlet pipe, badabing badaoom.

It's a little difficult to tell where it is leaking from.. but it is not leaking oil into the ps fluid.

The shaft seal leaks on the pump. You will need a bearing puller to take the drive gear off, there ferkin tight.

99% of the time there is no need to replace that seal ;)

So I just pull it apart and replace the seals that are easy to get to. If it still leaks I need a bearing puller.

Just did a rebuild on mine ,you need a puller to take the gear off to get to the main seal that leaks . Most times the shaft has to be replaced as it will have groves in it from the seal .
The seal kit and shaft cost $114.00 from toyota ,while your at it replace the bearing but get it from a bearing shop as toyota wanted $66 and a bearing shop $5 .
If you have a manual it shows a diagram of parts lay out + how to disassemble and reassemble .
Your other option is buy a exchange pump .
