FJ75 Cruiser gearbox interchangeability

Hi,

I have a 1985 Troopy that i've put a Toyota 1UZ in.

The original H55F is starting to make some unkind noises, and it's just getting worse. I'd like to put another box in, question is, is there anything stronger, that will bolt upto my bellhousing?

Reason for asking, is apparently there is 2 different types of H55F, one with a tilt, and one without. Whan I bought my kit from CRS, they sent the 'other' housing, and when bolted to the engine, there was a very bad lean to the engine/box, depending on which one was sitting flat.

It's been rectified, but i'm now wary of spending dollars on another box, only to find there is this horrid lean going on. Am hoping something from a diesel 80 will slot in?

Thanks

Sorry the box from an 80 will not fit with the bell housing you have
It is called a h150 they are much stronger than the h55 also much bigger
if you do want a strong box that will last it is the box for you
but you will need to get your bell housing redrilled (not too hard)

what is the input shaft length on the h55 you have ?

Cheers thrashlux,
From my reading, the H150 is the way to go (are they ex all diesel 80's?)

How much of a difference is there in hole spacings? I have access to a lot of machining gear at work (mills, lathes etc etc). Failing that, I'll just have a machinist do it for me.

No idea on gearbox shaft length either, may be able to find out though, as before I fitted the engine up, I took shitloads of measurements. Are the input shafts from both boxes the same length?

What about differences in shifter positions. Also output shaft/transfer case flanges? Will I be looking at getting new shafts made up/modded to fit?

Cheers again

Hey no worries

the input shaft is 190 mm on the h150
not sure what yours is
best thing u can do is get a H150 from a povo 80 they have the full non elec transfer also if from 1hz they have a lower first gear (good for crawling)

use the 80- transfer dont try and adapt to split case
you will need new drive shafts (length change)

shifter locations: well you just kinda have to wing it
the way i do it is make up a blank that you can bolt or weld over the top of the existing holes then cut new ones where needed

the 79 seres TD and 75's with 1fz ran the H150 or H151 (same box physically, different ratios and input shaft spline)
you can use any box from any 80 or from a fz powered 75

 maybe u could use the tunnel section from an fz powered 75 for your shifter locations? and mounting crossmember
happy hunting
