how ya goin,
i am having some issues with my gearbox and i dont know what it is.
the gearbox is OUT of an 87 2.8 diesel (not sure what the gearbox is called) but it is IN a 83 hilux.
it has a noise in 2nd 3rd and 5th gear (sort of like a grinding noise)
and gets worse in low range, that bad that you can hardly talk over the top of it.i only know just the basics of gearboxes so help would be great
my brother rekons it's the centre bearing in the gearbox but hes no expert on gearboxes.ive had people tell me diferent things but no-one can tell me that it is definately that.
so i thought i would ask you guys what would be best, changing the gearbox or just replacing it.also if u know what the grinding would be it would be great to let me know thanks..
cheers..smiley..

from what you describe, the rear bearing on the countershaft and/or the mainshaft has failed.
it is probably rebuildable if it hasn't been driven excessive distance with the damaged bearings but you will need some special tools and some patience if you've never built a gearbox before. get a gregorys or haynes manual, the procedure is fairly well described and it should list the special tools you need. if the cost of the tools and the complexity of the job doesnt put you off. it is a lucky dip - you may get it open and find that the cost of parts exceeds the price of a box from a wreckers.

If fixing your box is out of the question, you can find plenty of G52's around for relatively cheap.
I would do as dumbdunce says and crack it open and see what the damage is and go from there.

is the box called a g52.
is that a good strong box or is it fairly weak.
i suppose i dont have much power to throw at it so i don think i'll break it.
yea i might just check with the wrecker and see how cheap i can get a box for and pull this one apart and hopefully i can fix it for cheaper.
cheers..smiley..

Yep, its a G52 and they're not the strongest. They blow 5th gear pretty easy when laboured in 5th or towing. You'll be fine with it behind a 4Y just dont shock load it or stay in 5th too long.

ohh yea sweet,thanks for that.
so if i have to change the g'box would it be wise to get the stronger one,im pretty sure a r151 is the strongest but i could be wrong.what model hilux do they come out in.if i got the money i might fit some crawler gears in the gearbox while its apart.it all comes down to money though.

Crawl gears go in the transfer case not the gearbox but you will have that off if you are rebuilding the box anyway.
Pretty sure the R151 has a chain driven transfer so you will need an adaptor if you want to run reduction gears so you can still use the gear driven transfer.

Yeah its not the cheaper option, thats for sure. Would be a strong combo if you went down that way. Apart from the initial purchase of the R series box, there's the adapter and then also new driveshafts as the lengths of the drivetrain will be longer.

Have read somewhere on here that there is a nut on 5th gear that comes off and thats why they blow 5th think it was ruff that siad he's tack welded a few to stop it coming loose if my box is ever pulled down i'll be doing it.

hilux79,yea i meant the transfer case sorry my mistake, and yea i think i might just keep my g52 thats going to be expensive as yamaha-308 said.might be strong but im not doing anything extreme with 33's and a 4y haha.
sic lux,i will check that out about the nut on 5th gear, see what i can find.i wont be towing or anything like that but the stronger the better.
im hoping its just gonna be the rear bearing and nothing to major.if it is though why would it get louder in low range, like you dont need to rev it or anything, with it just crawling on a idol its ridiculously loud.

Not all have the nut some have a C clip. I hade to change 5th in my old Lux and it had the C clip.
