I don't think there would be much in it, but I thought I would ask if any one knew.

How much weight difference would there be between a 5 L holden V8 out of say a VN dunnydore and a 327 small block chev .

Just for interest sake.

Cheers

Weightwise I'd reckon they'd be pretty damn close but given a choice I'd take the Chev over the holden.. Put on alloy heads, water pump and inlet manifold and it'll be quite a bit lighter.

holden is lighter than a chev less steel in the block and alum intake
a stock 327 cast steel manifold and is very strong in its bottom end
some come with 4 bolt main caps from the factory use the chev it will
make more power for less money than the holden

Considering the 327 has heads that flow not nearly as much as VN heads on a 304 motor I would beg to differ.

Yes the 4 bolt mains are a good thing though but unless you rev it to 7000RPM they aren't a requirement, even then you can get a stud girdle and safely rev to about 7500RPM.

That said when going all out a chev has alot more aftermarket parts available at a cheaper attainable price than the holden motor. I am talking after market blocks, heads, timing gear, the lot. I just got my 5L motor built to 523Hp and 455ft/lb at the flywheel and it set me back about $16K including new reco block and heads. That much money will get you a big block Chev crate motor with similar power but more talk and milder state of tune.
