What tyres are you running?
I run 285's on both 80's
I have 4.55 gears in a petrol auto - perfect
I had the 4.55's in the TD 80 5 speed - too low on the highway
Same thing as you, i wanted 4.3's but couldn't get them for the rear. As it turned out the 4.55's were good in the auto.
When I had the 35's on the diesel 80 it was good with the 4.55's though.
Hope it helps.

they are available new in 4.3, 4.56, 4.875, 5.1 and probably 5.3.
transfer gears are a better option.

Running 35's now, but prob going back to 33's was going 4.56 but have been told they are hard to get for the front, and wit them in it's to low for hiway stuff, thats why I was looking at 4.3 from a 100..

which engine do you have? in most 80's, the factory 4.1's are ideal with 35's on the highway, helps keep the revs reasonable.

they are "bolt in" in the sense that there's nothing to cut, but you need the skillz and tools to set up a diff or pay someone to do it.
as for transfer gears they only affect low range gearing, the 1HZ is happy with low revs, peak torque is around 2000rpm so keeping the high range gearing tall should make it happy. a turboed 1HZ should happily turn 35's with stock gearing at illegal speeds on most freeways

i'm sure terrain tamer did a high and low gear reduction for the cruiser t-case but was expensive compared to just low range reduction. doing the diffs worked out cheaper from memory.
