i want to convert the 1hz motor in my 80 to a v8 i would rather get the v8 out of the new 70 cruisers or a chev (either way a diesel)

i was wondering what sort of price i would be looking at and if there is anywere i could get it done around brissy? and hopefully get it all done leagally.

thanks

PM killalux, he does those conversions. Not cheap, for a turbo 6.5 chev $20 000

i wouldn't bother with the new cruiser 4.5, have heard they have oil use problems.
Could use a Duramax, but would be quite costly.
Best option for a diesel i feel would be the 1HD-FTE cruiser 6cyl turbo out of a 79 series ute.
Make great power when chipped (about same as a stock LS1), Great economy, and i beleive they bolt in, Just need a bit of wiring done

Everyone I've talked to said they wouldn't touch the chev diesel v8 with a long stick as they aren't very reliable and don't create enough power for the cost of the conversion in my books. Look at the thread on 4wdaction forums about the the chev diesels it'll make you definatly turn the other way and run! If you had to stay diesel the 1HD-FTE would probably be my choice but for the price, power and fuel economy you can't go past the LS1.

I have done a few FTE'S they are a great both ute and 100 series engines including my own 80 i have a 100 seires one much more powerful than the ute version you cannot chip the ute version as high as the 100 series as the boost cut will stop u plus the pump is different and so is the turbo as well

have plans on doing vdj in about 6 months ute version first
the 200 will be a night mare due the computer controlling 2 variable vane turbos and running a 6 speed auto that has no equivalent to bolt into an 80 as it has a center output rear shaft plus a heap of traction aids

my 100s powered 80 smashes chev v8 diesels and uses 2 /3 of the fuel
i get 11 per hundred hiway or city running 35's with a 3 inch lift
and i am no grandma i have had the truck up to some crazy speeds and it tows like nothing else

the vdj ute version has the same output as the 100s fte so its pretty much a waste of effort but i want to do one to path the way for the 200s vdj into an 80

the oil usage problems have been found to be related to a crankcase breather /vac pump issue and has been addressed by toyota

killa, i have an 8 and it doesnt have any oil issues... my mechanic thinks it is toyota oil (laughing) as he services 4 and none have any issues with between 10 and 90,000km.

i recon the new v8 would be way too expensive an option for what you get compared to a 79 or 100 series fte motor.

im trying to convince a mate to do the conversion to an fte, so look out killa you might have some more work to do.

Ok, no worries I will admit i'm wrong about the oil issues, But as you said would be quite expensive.

Mate i wouldn't mind doin a 1HD-FTE, Just let me know if ya go ahead.

another thought on the new v8, i've seen more than a few come into the work shop with dead motors because the bottom oil cooler has been smashed on a rock and all the oil ran out. seriously who puts an oil cooler under the sump!!!!!![/quote]

Out of curiosity whats a conversion like this worth?

i could pick up the single turbo v8 for around 16,000 retail for around 19,000 (i know a guy who knows a guy lol)

but for that kind of coin i could pretty much rebuild the 1hz with a ball baering turbo.

plus the cost of rego these days.

but atm im still not too sure.

so does that mean the oil use problem pretty much sorts itself out?.

upgrade

go for it whack a turbo on 1hz ,but make sure you replace big end bearings. for that kind of coin you could put in 350 chev crate motor with adapter and all the good shit and still have 10 grand change, more money than sense.

that was the plan i was gonna put all the gear turbo intercooler and whatever else needs to be done to help the engine handle the power..

wont be mine it'll be all the banks money.. i need a rear locker steel bullbar and a fridge to yet so there next on the list.

its all $$$ (not getting paid enough i think)

mine was 10500 for the 100 series but i made my own exhaust and did all wiring and large front mount intercooler and plumbing myself

i would be happy to do it for people when i get back to aus early next year i will be in brisbane or townsville to live when i return

i would be happy with about 2000-3000 to fit and wire (the price range is due to if auto or man , petrol or diesel or factory Td ) and can organise exhaust and intercooler at additional cost

cheers

jonathan

1HZ turbo is a bad idea

it may still be cheaper but u will use a lot more fuel and will be heaps slower

if you do do the 1hz make sure you keep money aside for spares heads pistions and precom chambers

basically the super toyota reliability will not be there any more

i have been there and done the whole 1hz turbo thing and they seem ok in the short term even for a few years, till you realise the damage being done on the inside and by then it is too late.( bit like smoking cigarettes)

you would be far better getting a 1hdt
when you add up the price of the turbo kit and pump mods plus freshen up

it makes sense just to get the factory turbo motor because of all the extra power ,reliability and better fuel consumption that it offers even in 1hdt form

I agree 100% with what thrashlux is saying I've had troubles with the 1hz and it just isn't worth turboing it when you can buy the factory turbo motor and bolt it in for about the same price as the turbo kit.
