Waterproof 1FZ

Just wondering if anyone has come up with a way to waterproof the 4.5 1FZ-FE.

Im getting sick of the the engine only running on a couple of cyliders every time it looks at water, even if you give it a quick spray with a hose.

ive tried sealing the distributor cap with silastic, and the little hole in the bottom of it, but that doesnt seem to work.
Is the ignition coil causing the problems?

Hope some can help me out

ours done that same mate, look at getting new leads. if they are a few years old they would have possibly perished by now and let water in.

there are two holes on the dizzy, one on bottom and one near the adjustment bracket on side.

i have fitted breathers to both holes up to the firewall as mine use to drop cylinders but ever since (touch wood) the donk has survived the water.

new leads and dizzy cap (and gasket) will also help!

Get the engine hot and spray it all with silicone 80 spray. Mine goes through water over the bonnet and not splutter at all. Ive had an old 1 that did it once. Took 3 days to dry out

If you have a compressor try plumbing some air fittings into the dizzy. Run compressed air through it whenever you go offroading.

the problem might be not so much the distributor, but water getting under the top plastic cover and/or getting down the plug holes. try sealing that and see how you go.

Had trouble with water in plug for the throtle position sensor. Filled conections with water proof grease and havin't had any problems since.

I fitted breathers to mine also and it worked well.. still used to play up occasionally but when it did it was just a matter of squirting some CRC down the breather and it would clear up straight away!

i cant give specific experience on the 4.5
but silicon spray does wonders. spraying it on the leads and well anything electrical cant hurt.
but it depends, how deep water are you looking for go through?

Thanks for all the replies guys.
There are some river crossing in the vic high country which get reasonably deep especially in winter, so i wouldnt mind being able to wade through something at headlight height at leasr, but at the moment i could throw half a bucket of water across the engine and she acts up
On my previous 80 i put a breather from one of the holes on the dizzy but i didnt realize there was a second one, so ill check that one out when i get time

I'm just about to put an air tank in, so i'll plumb a line into the dizzy and c how that goes

If your going to plumb breathers into the dizzy. Why not just plumb it into the air filter?? I think that the pressurized system is still the best though. Just have it on a air solinoid, from your tank and just switch it on when crossing rivers. But again what pressures have people found suitable, 5psi?? Any pressure is good pressure, solong as its greater than the water pressure at what ever depth your crossing.

I really dont care if I distroy my engine, that way I can rebuild it :). Sofar the deepest Ive found is just over headlights and no drama's. Im also wondering if my 110 litre gas tank (fitted where rear tank was) is going to make my arse float in the deep stuff??

If you put hoses on the 2 holes in the dizzy, and seal the third small one with silicone, then tee the hoses into either side of the filter blocked sensor, the restriction the filter poses, will promote flow of air through the dizzy and keep it dry (unless the filter fills with water) The other place water gets in is under the throttle body into 3 and 4 plug....descent leads and some waterproofing foam/silicone/etc will make the motor run underwater almost :)
