Changing Ring & Pinion Gearing

I'm about to go through the process of changing the ring & pinion gearing in my GU ute (again) - this time going from genuine 4.625s to 4.88s to compensate for my new 37's
I have been given some contacts in Canberra to do the job but the preferred supplier were only prepared to do the install if I overhaul the diff at the same time . . . full bearing overhaul etc.
I've done about 97,000 kms and the 4.625s went in within the first couple of weeks of owning the car. Is it worth trying to find someone who will just do the install or do I fork out and get it done "properly"?

I guess bearings are cheaper than a blowup if its running 37's.

Wondering why over the last couple of years people have started using the Americanism of calling it a RING & PINION as when I did my trade course and speaking to non 4wd people that specialise in final drives it has always been known as a CROWN WHEEL & PINION ??

Me too. R&P is easier.

yeah thats true.
Like wendle said bearings are cheap, cant you pull the ctr out yourself and have them fit the gears? i think most diff shops would have no problem with this and would contact you if something did need replacing.

I grew up in the US so have always heard it referred to as R&P . . .
Biggest problem is that I live more than 2 hours out of Canberra and only have 1 car . . . . easier for me to go drive-in-drive-out for this one because as soon as the ski season starts up, I work 6 days a week and am not allowed to take holidays so I can't afford to be mucking around too much with this mod.

I would of thought 4.625's would be OK with 37s.
Will only drop revs a t 100ks by 200~ or so?

They are OK on the flats but I need to drive from Jindabyne (900m above sea level) to Perisher Valley (1750m above sea level) every day and with the 4.625s the GU chugs fuel like there is no tomorrow and 5th gear is just dead weight.
I'm driving from Jindy to Sydney and back tomorrow for some wheeling and his GQ runs 37's with only 4.1s so perhaps I won't feel so bad about my setup after that trip.

what are you doing with the 4.625's when you put the 4.8's in.
