The 2WD box has 2 bolts on the side and one on the top. They also have a smaller (and weaker) sector shaft which means you will have to use a 2WD pitman arm. I would just get a 4WD box, they are a lot stronger and not that expensive - I picked a tight one up from a 99 lux for 160 bucks..

The sector shaft is the same size from 88 on. Lots of people use the 2wd pitman arm on 4wd boxes when doing crossover high steering.

I think the box mechanicaly will be strong enough but i dont know how well you will attach it to the frame. I imagine it could be possible to crack the housing with only 2 bolts on the side.

Cheers. Good to know.

What size tyres are you looking at running? That may have an effect on how the mount lasts..

If you got the info from Pirate im pretty sure we got a different steering box than they did. I think there 2WD boxes were the same all the way through.

I'm running a 2wd box with the 2wd pitman arm. It turns 35 no worries. However the 2wd box takes about 1and3/4 turns more to get from lock to lock then the ifs box. It's no probs once your used to it but people sometimes comment on it when they haven't driven it before. To mount it I fish plated each side on the rail and added cruchpipes, for the top mount I shaped a bit of 50x10 flatbar to suit the top of the rail and picked up the top hole using some 75x50 c section shaped to sit horizontal above the rail.

looking at 35's maybe bigger. Another noob question, what are the generations? up to 84ish 1st gen, then up to 89ish 2nd gen, then up to 96ish 3rd gen?

Late 79 to early 84= 1st Gen,
Late 84 to Early 88= 2nd Gen,
Late 88 to Early 97= 3rd Gen,
Late 97 to Early 05= 4th Gen,
Late 05 to Current = 5th Gen,

The 4 runner is different though as the Late 84 to early 89 was classed as the 1st Gen. Because there was no 4runner in the 79-84 line up. 2nd Gen 4 runner was also released by Toyota Aus before they had released all Aus stock of the 1st Gen hense there are a few First gens with 89 compliance yet the second gen was released late 88.

Commonly refering to them as generations only came about when Toyota released the 4wd hilux. I dont know why people dont put the earlier ones in as well.

by error
Also note Gen 1 Runners from 84 to mid 85 have solid front diff (same as hilux)
